UPDATED MAY 30, 2019

The beloved 1982 film 'The Dark Crystal' is now streaming for Netflix. But that is just the beginning for fans of the fantasy adventure film directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz. The film streaming on Netflix is paving the way for the online streaming service's brand new series, 'The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance'.

The Netflix fantasy adventure series is actually a prequel to the 1982 film. The 10-episode fantasy adventure series will tell the story that led to the film since it takes place many years before the events of the film. The series will be shot in the UK and will star an ensemble of state-of-the-art creatures created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop™ and Brian Froud, the original feature film's conceptual designer.

"'The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance' will combine the art of puppetry perfected by The Jim Henson Company, with Louis' vision, powerful storytelling and a mix of cutting-edge digital imagery and visual effects," Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix had said. "I can't wait for families around the world to see how we bring these unique characters to life."

The fantasy adventure series is scheduled to come to Netflix on August 30 this year.

Plot

Set in the world of Thra, the show follows three Gelflings who discover the petrifying secret behind Skeksis' power. They set out on an exciting epic journey to start a rebellion and save their world.

Trailers

There is no trailer released yet, but stay tuned, MEA WorldWide (MEAWW) will update this article once it is out.

A teaser dropped May 30 and the 2-minute video introduces us to a dark force that aims at corrupting the life force with just a single touch. The prequel series to Jim Henson’s hit takes us back to the world of Thra where three Gelflings discover the truth behind Skeksis' power and set out to spread the word and begin a resistance.

Directed by Louis Leterrier (from 'Now You See Me', 'Clash of the Titans' and 'The Incredible Hulk' fame), the motive was to ensure that the TV show looks as similar as possible to the film. This means that they really had to put up a good fight to use puppetry instead of CGI for the characters.

"I was not fighting against anyone, I was fighting against common sense and practicality. It's so so complicated to build a puppet, hire puppeteers, all that stuff. We chose the long, hardest road and we're very thankful [we did]. It looks absolutely stunning," he was reported saying.
