'Supergirl' season 5: Here's how Kara Danvers' suit has evolved from blue tank top to eradicator armor

Ahead of the fifth season, The CW gave a glimpse of Kara's new suit and she's traded her skirt for pants this time around. Plus, Kara's got a new hairstyle.

It does seem like a tradition to give new suit upgrades to each of the heroes in the Arrowverse. Barry Allen's Grant Gustin has rocked a new version of the Flash outfit each season and the same goes for Supergirl Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist). Ahead of the fifth season, The CW gave a glimpse of Kara's new suit and she's traded her skirt for pants this time around.

According to the press material,  the new suit was done for  a purpose: "The new suit, conceptualized by Supergirl costume designer Victoria Auth and created by Ironhead Studios and Bill Hargates Costumes, follows the evolution of super suits in executive producer Greg Berlanti’s “Arrowverse,” which has seen redesigns of both the Arrow and Flash suits in recent years." Kara's suit has evolved over time and the first of Win Schott's  (Jeremy Jordan) suits saw a blue tank top, red shirts, a golden strap and a red headband, which Kara outrightly slams. The suit after had a cape and was less revealing.

The current suit is pretty much the same design as the second. The notable change, however, is the House of El's coat of arms emblazoned on her chest, much akin to Superman's.  Over-the- knee boots come in and was topped off by Kal-El's blanket which substituted for the cape.

The Eradicator suit then took over and probably was the coolest of the lot. The armor first appeared in 2012’s digital-first comic Superman Beyond #8 by JT Krul and Howard Porter. The issue's storyline was set in the future and saw an aging Superman forced to stay inside his Fortress of Solitude after Lex Luthor’s daughter Lucinda hatched a scheme to surround the entire planet with a ring of Kryptonite meteors. This new ring resulted in Kryptonian radiation infecting all of the Earth — which meant Superman couldn’t get out of his Fortress without being adversely affected by the lethal poison.

Sleek, a full-face obscuring helmet, a J.A.R.V.I.S. like interface within completed the look and that perhaps is a suit to remember.  In what comes across as a progressive move, season 5 sees pants coming in. The suit retains the cape and blue is the dominant color. The suit is accented with the red of the House of El mark and so are her boots, along with a gold belt at the waist. Plus, Kara's got a new hairstyle.
