Hunting for buried treasure on an island is every kid’s fantasy. But the adults have found a way to indulge in this dream too.

‘The Curse Of Oak Island’ has returned with its seventh season, and the first episode aired on History Channel, on November 5.  The reality show continues with the explorations of the island by the extremely determined Lagina (Rick and Marty) brothers and their team . And this time, they are keen to uncover the many mysteries lying under a swamp.

In the premiere of the seventh season, the team began by exploring the swamp believing that there is a shipwreck at the bottom of it. Meanwhile, they discovered numerous strange artifacts, including a sharp wooden structure and come to the conclusion that it could be from the 14th century. Not just that, this raised the question of whether it could be instruments hidden by the Knight’s Templar. There are new revelations, claims, and some more wild speculation. There’s a mysterious coin there too, and the explorers were left racking their brains on what its presence on the island means. There’s no hint of buried treasure yet, but if it were that simple, we’d all be there with our shovels.

If you’re looking for something intellectually stimulating, this isn’t the show for you. But if you’re willing to let go of your disbelief and rationality for some good old hunt for pirate treasure, well this is your top pick. Suspense? Check. Mystery? Check.  There’s much sibling love to go around, so that makes the episode enjoyable.  It’s highly entertaining, and the explorers seem to be having a good time as well.

The veracity of fact check, well that’s still to be debated. Initially, the episode moves at a painfully sluggish pace. The same points are repeated and you can’t help but just wonder why the episode wasn’t cut down from 1 hour to 40 minutes.

The episode was also a tribute to their old friend Dan Blankenship. In the first half of the episode, the brothers remember their old friend, who had made several crucial discoveries on Oak Island. He passed away at the age of 95 last March. Then, there’s a little backstory required, to explain what exactly is the ‘curse’.

For years, treasure hunters have scoured Oak Island thoroughly, in the hope that they will be the ones to extricate wooden chests filled with gold. The tale behind this manic search began centuries before the show ‘The Curse Of Oak Island’, in 1795, young men discovered a depression in the ground beneath an old oak tree on Oak island, leading them to the conclusion that there’s treasure buried there.

The hunt continued in the late 1800s, with little success but more ferocity. And then began the ‘curse’, where five humans perished in the hunt for buried treasure. According to the legend, in order to solve the Oak Island mystery, seven had to die.

And so, the Lagina brothers, decided to take on the task head-on in 2006. They haven’t discovered any treasure no, but have formulated some bizarre theories, including  the idea that the island is the hiding place for the Holy Grail and the lost folios of William Shakespeare.

Will they ever find the treasure? That remains to be seen.
