'The Boys' Season 2 Premiere: Deep is still a mess and fans love it, but the weekly wait is killing them
'The Boys' season 2 premiered with three episodes and every minute of the show reminded us as to why we loved the show in the first place. From the moment we meet the Boys and Vought's Seven to Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) joining Hughie's (Jack Quaid) side again, the show races ahead swiftly to show that this season is not simply about the Boys bringing the supes down. The premiere hinted at how going forward, there will be internal conflict within the Seven, as Homelander (Antony Starr) and Stormfront (Aya Cash) clash for more rewards, attention, and power. The show has got a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes indicating how good a start the second season has had as of now.
We also saw how Deep (Chase Crawford) tried to get back in the good books of Seven by targeting the Boys. The fact that Deep is still a mess emotionally seems to have gone well with fans. Beginning with throwing tantrums at bars and getting threatened with calls to TMZ, to revealing how much of self-hatred he buried within because of the appearance of his gills that were seen as disgusting by everyone around him — we learned a lot about him.
Deep met with a faux therapist who pushes him to join the Church of the Collective. In a very cult-like manner, ironically, it helps Deep understand how his self-hatred was one of the main reasons why he ended up violating women. Once he understands that, he also opens up to the faux therapist who calls herself a life guide and talks to her about what it feels like to have learned that his parents had received payments to experiment on Compound V with him.
He also remembers the first time he had experienced hearing the voice of a sea creature at the age of nine and turns out the entire experience was traumatic. Now that he has realized, if you expect him to be any better, you do not know the Seven. He tries to apologize to Starlight, but only so that he can enter the Seven again. He seems more moved by his whale Lucy's death than by how uncomfortable Starlight might feel in his presence. So he is definitely a mess at the moment. This is exactly what fans love.
A viewer noted how the show continues to make fans appreciate it even further by commenting on some very important issues like racism, fascism, and even about women's clothing. This fan wrote, "Starlight and Stormfront ranting about the lack of pockets had my wife rolling. Not just with supes, but with women's clothing in general, any time she finds an article of clothing with pockets she's thrilled. #TheBoys."
