'The Boys' Season 2 Episode 3 is proof Homelander and Stormfront are match made in purgatory, built on hate
Phrases such as 'match made in heaven' or 'fated to be' is commonly used when speaking about lovers, but what about frenemies. From the figurative razors that Homelander shoots at Stormfront at the end of 'The Boys' Season 2 Episode 3, it is clear that this match is made in purgatory and will continue to be built on the foundation of hate. At the beginning of the episode, the new director of Vought approaches the Seven to tell them that the newly arrived Supe terrorist in the country is a threat to all of them so they must erase the threat. At this time, Homelander puts Mr Edgar in his place by repeating his earlier words to him.
When Edgar had chosen Stormfront to be a part of Seven, he hadn't informed Homelander. At this time, Edgar had made it clear that Vought's most prized asset was Compound V, and not the Seven or even Homelander for that matter. So this time, he repeats the same to the others and says that Vought is not their partner but a corporate company that looks at all supes as their products. His standing up to Edgar impresses Stormfront, or so she shows off. However, very soon, once the hunt for the supe terrorist who is under Billy Butcher's control begins, Stormfront's true face appears. Be it her reconsideration for the public property or public themselves, or her thirst for looking at her victim's eyes as the light goes out, she has all characteristics that go hand in hand with that of Homelander.
When the hunt begins, Homelander tells his team that the supe terrorist that they're after is his. He wants all the attention and glory that would come from arresting/killing this terrorist but Stormfront understands this all too well and so she jumps the gun. She also understands how the business of branding works and she does everything possible to gain the public's attention after she manages to get the terrorist before Homelander. This terrorist was someone who could have proved the media's claims about Vought and how they engineered a compound V to make superheroes. Now that Stormfront has neutralized him, both the Seven and Vought is safe for the time being.
However, Homelander is not at all happy with all the attention that Stormfront has gained with her action. In fact, he asks her why she didn't heed his instruction and she simply says that if you snooze, you lose. She also refers to his age and says that he is old now indicating that maybe it is time for Homelander to handover the mantle to someone younger and more capable -- such as herself. Homelander in the meantime has been entirely distracted with his son and attempting to introduce his son to the joys of having a superpower.
He does so by dropping his son Ryan from the top of a building to teach him to fly. His son dies momentarily, and then wakes up with his powers awakened. However, things do not go as Homelander planned. Instead, he is now hated by his son and Becca. So while he deals with this whole new feeling of actually having a family, he has dropped the ball on leading the Seven and Stormfront has used this opportunity to make herself more visible.
Of course, with Stormfront's success, The Boys led by Billy Butcher fail yet again and this time, Billy understands something important. He gives up something that he had held on to since the beginning of the season and it would now be interesting to see how Billy and the others measure up to the Seven.
