A teenage schoolgirl was reportedly raped, doused in petrol and burned to death by her neighbor in Ghazipur, India in one of the latest sex attack stories emerging from the country. The 16-year-old from Dildarnagar was alone at her home on Saturday when a man from her neighborhood broke into the property and assaulted her.

The girl reportedly gave a statement shortly before her death and told police that the accused attempted to force her to elope with him. When she refused, he poured petrol on her and set her on fire, the Daily Mail reported.

When the neighbors heard her cries, they rushed to the scene and took the teenager to a local police station. She was taken to the district hospital from the police station before being transferred to a trauma center in Varanasi about 70 km away. However, she died of her injuries during the journey.

The Ghazipur superintendent of police, Arvind Chaturvedi, while talking to The Times of India, said: "The girl died on the way to Varanasi and the body has been sent for post mortem. "

"On the basis of her statement recorded by the Dildarnagar police before her death, and on the complaint of her brother, a named FIR has been lodged in this connection and several teams have been engaged to arrest the accused," the officer said.

India has witnessed a high number of gruesome rape and sexual assault cases over the recent years, leading to countrywide protests for stricter legislation. In another incident, a man raped and beheaded a four-year-old girl last month before peeling off the skin of her face so that she could not be identified, according to police.

The 27-year-old accused from Khopoli town in Maharashtra, India, reportedly wanted to have a sexual relationship with the girl's mothers, officers said. However, he killed the child out of revenge after the mother rejected his advances.

In yet another incident, an engineering student in January was gang-raped for two days before being left in the woods of eastern Odisha for dead. The attack occurred after the 20-year-old woman was approached by a man, claiming to be friends with her brother at a station as she waited for her train.
