A Taiwanese tourist said that she was shocked to discover that wearing a bikini was prohibited in a famous tourist destination in the Philippines. After she was caught wearing, what many described as just "a string," she was arrested and then ordered to pay a fine.

The incident took place when Lin Tzu Ting, 26, was enjoying a vacation with her boyfriend in the island of Boracay when her choice of outfits raised quite a few eyebrows of local residents. Onlookers were left stunned when she walked on the Puka Beach in the area twice wearing a thong bikini. After the local residents took pictures of her and posted them on social media it caught the attention of the authorities, who vowed to take action.

They began a hunt for Ting and after locating her at her hotel, placed her under arrest. The exact nature of charges against the tourist was unclear but it was presumed to be related to the current laws on indecency.

She was finally released by the police after she agreed to pay 2,500 Philippine pesos ($48) before she planned to leave the island which was on October 11.

Ting admitted that she had no idea that wearing a bikini would be prohibited on the island and she thought that her choice of outfit was her own way of expressing herself. However, following her arrest, the authorities warned the tourists to observe "proper decorum" as a form of respect for Philippine culture.

Jess Baylon, the police chief of Malay, which includes the island of Boracay, also condemned Ting's actions.

"Several residents and tourists took photos of her on Wednesday and Thursday because of what she was wearing. It was literally a string. In our conservative culture, it is unacceptable," she said, Daily Mail reported
