LLANO, TEXAS: A stray dog who was found with multiple gunshot wounds is now on his way to recovery. The dog was named 'Sweet Messiah' by caregivers at the Hill Country Humane Society, an animal rescue organization in Texas.

The dog was brought to the shelter last week by a good Samaritan after being found with "mutiple fragments or whole bullets in his body." The person who saved Sweet Messiah also informed the Llano County Sheriff's Office of the dog's predicament. The dog was then taken to an emergency room by the shelter staff, according to the Hill Country Humane Society, where doctors found bullet wounds close to the dog's nose, neck, upper back, and rear leg. Caretakers believe the dog may have suffered as many as eight gunshot wounds, according to CBS Austin. Thankfully, they did not hit any major arteries.

Sweet Messiah first caused the Hill Country Humane Society some concern because they believed the dog might not survive the night. The shelter wrote on Facebook, "He is anemic, most likely from the blood loss. His stomach was full of gas and had to be drained. The vet wants to keep him longer and confer with other vets on the best course of action for this guy."

Miraculously, the dog survived. "We are very glad to know he made it through the night. His fight is not over, but he's in good hands and is receiving the best care thanks to all of our amazing supporters," the shelter wrote. "Thank you so much to everyone who has donated toward his care."

The post includes a picture of the dog, who was coated in blood and mud upon arrival at the facility. Sweet Messiah was placed with a foster family on Tuesday, January 17, after the shelter decided that his condition had improved enough. However, he won't be available for adoption until he has recovered a little more. "We are not sure when he will be available," the Hill Country Humane Society wrote on social media. "We will continue to update! He will be seeing a new vet soon, so we can have their opinion on providing him the most comfortable and happy life!"

Help Asheville Bears (HAB) announced they are offering a $5,000 reward for any information on this heartbreaking case of animal cruelty.
