'Supernatural' Season 15 Episode 19: Here's why Jack as God 2.0 didn't bring back Castiel or Eileen
Still reeling from that penultimate episode that felt like the finale but wasn't? Given that we have one more hour to go before 'Supernatural' ends forever, titled 'Carry On', we might just see the boys in Hawaii. But the lone photo from the episode released in advance shows Sam and Dean face off against four monsters, which is odd. It means there will still be monsters for the brothers to hunt. But if Jack has God's powers why wouldn't he just snap monsters out of existence entirely?
Which also begs the second most vital question that fans have been asking after watching the episode -- why isn't Jack pulling Castiel out of the Empty or bringing Eileen back? The finale might make this clearer, but right now, all we have to go on is that Jack's own final words to Sam and Dean.
Absorbing God's powers has changed Jack -- when Sam asks if he is God, he shrugs and says "I'm me" but never clarifying what that means. It is as ambiguous a statement as the Biblical "I am who I am".
Jack also tells them that Amara aka The Darkness is part of him and they are in "balance". So coming back to why monsters still exist in Earth 2.0, it could be about this very balance. If 'light' exists in the form of Sam and Dean and humanity, so will darkness in the form of monsters and things that go bump in the night.
Jack after absorbing God's powers (and Amara's) is God 2.0. So, he only brings back Creation to its status quo point. However, he can no longer grab a beer with the boys because he has fundamentally changed. He wants to be a "hands-off" God, possibly only interfering when something goes radically out of balance. This means he has no personal interest in Sam and Dean nor does he want to be part of their story or 'write' their story anymore. Or rather he can't, because if he starts to, he will go down the same megalomaniac road that Chuck went down on because absolute power used on a whim will eventually corrupt.
The Apocalypse world versions of Bobby, Charlie, and the others were never meant to be on Sam and Dean's Earth. After God destroyed their world, they are not rooted as living entities in any world in the multiverse. Similarly, Eileen came to earth as a ghost because God opened Hell, and then she was 'resurrected' with a spell. This might have resulted in Eileen and the rest of the Apocalypse world people being more insubstantial or unstable as living entities on the show's Earth dimension. This could explain why they did not come back when Jack brought all the world's living creatures back. Bringing them back would require some 'special' effort on Jack's part which he is no longer willing to do.
And finally, there is Castiel. There is still one more episode to go, so we can of course hope he will be brought back. But logically, the new 'hands-off' Jack is probably not going to meddle in the Empty's domain either, or in Hell or Heaven anymore. Bringing Castiel back means bending the rules. It could be construed as "writing the story", which he thinks is a mistake. So in the end, we just have Sam and Dean, free to write their own story -- which takes them right back to what they have always done. Saving people, hunting things. The Family business.
Next week's two-hour special will kick off with an extended retrospective about the 15 years 'Supernatural' has been on-air titled 'Supernatural: The Long Road Home' on Thursday, November 19 at 8 pm ET, which will immediately be followed by the series final finale Episode 20, titled 'Carry On'.
