'Supernatural' Season 15 Episode 17: The Empty is going cray-cray, does that mean worse things for Castiel?

Who would have thunk that The Empty was going to be as big a threat as Chuck (aka God) one day? What we know of the Empty is a big fuzzy. We know the Empty or "nothingness" existed before even God, Amara, creation and destruction. Angels and demons go there after they die and sleep an endless, peaceful sleep. Well everyone except Castiel, who wakes up in The Empty when Jack cries for him. And then, he makes such a nuisance of himself that The Empty wakes up and has to temporarily create an entity called 'The Shadow' to deal with the problem.

Since then it can't go back to sleep. And as more time has passed without it being able to rest, the more deranged it has got. It now wears the face of Meg the demon, the only girl/demon to have kissed Castiel (aka Cas) and takes special pleasure in torturing Cas whenever he pops into its domain to discuss something. Needless to say, it hates Cas with every fiber of its existence and has now taken an unhealthy amount of interest in him. This is why when Cas exchanges his life for Jack, it says sadistically that it is going to wait till Cas is happy and then drag him back to its domain.

The Empty's domain has also become rather lively with Billie (aka Death) stashing Jack there for a while to hide him from God, and other demons like Ruby have woken up to talk to Cas. This means that the Empty has grown increasingly disgruntled about its once silent, endlessly peaceful sleep domain becoming the supernatural hub of the universe. In this episode, we get to see just how disgruntled.

Cas on his last visit asked about Billie's motivation for taking God out plan. Till then The Empty had only thought about Billie's promise to her -- that she would help it go back to sleep. It finds out that Billie is planning to take over after God and Amara are dead but this doesn't put its mind at ease. It wants to talk to Billie about the 'going back to sleep' plan but Billie is AWOL and refusing to answer her. So it goes into Death's library and starts killing the Death's reapers one by one. When Sam sneaks in, The Empty catches him too and starts torturing him to get Billie's attention. Sam manages to trick it and make it believe that he is "Death's emissary" and that Billie can't come right now but needs God's book of death.

Once it comes to know Sam lied to it, she is going to hate Team Free Will and guess who her whipping boy will be? Probably Cas. Till now, Cas is nowhere close to being happy and contented. So his return to the Empty is still not something to be worried about.

But, if Sam and Dean do manage to kill Chuck and get off the hamster wheel of God's badly scripted plots and Jack survives to tell the tale, Cas might finally be happy. This is precisely when the Empty will come to snatch him up so that it can torture Cas in its domain for all eternity between naps. And that doesn't sound like a happy ending for our favorite angel.

'Supernatural' airs on Thursdays at 8 pm only on The CW.
