‘Supernatural’ Season 15 Episode 16 Preview: Meet young Sam and Dean as they go after Baba Yaga, the witch
It's nostalgia time on 'Supernatural' in the upcoming episode 16 'Drag Me Away (From You)'. After all, how could we have the final season without a flashback to the boys' more innocent days that further deepens the mythology of the show?
At this point in the show, anything revealed about the boys' past could retroactively patch some crucial information or artifact that will help them fight the battle to come. But, we could also be looking at another filler episode. But hey, we'll take the cuteness factor of a young Sam and Dean any day, even this close to the finish line.
According to the show's synopsis, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are asked to investigate the murder of a childhood friend, calling them back to a motel from their past. The case will perplex the brothers because they imagined they had solved it a long time ago as high schoolers. Cue the trip down memory lane.
Christian Michael Cooper will play the young Sam and Paxton Singleton, the young Dean. Advance pictures show that Dean will be wearing that amulet that Sam gave him -- keeping the show's continuity intact. Kelsey Crane will play Caitlin, a former friend of the Winchester brothers who helped with the case back then. When Caitlin realizes the monster is killing again, she calls on the brothers for help.
The trailer gives a hint to who or what this monster might be. We see Dean speaking to Caitlin telling her that he still has nightmares about what went down. This is just after we see a flashback to a ghostly-looking hand with a ring emerge from a vending machine to scare a young Dean, who screams "Sammy!". This is when Caitlin tells him, "I think she's back."
But who is this "she"? We see shots of the monster's hand and how it likes to drag children away by their hair. In one shot, we see Sam researching furiously and the page he is on is all about Baba Yaga. the child-eating monster, often depicted as a deformed or ferocious-looking bony old woman in Russian folklore. Often considered a witch or sorceress, Baba Yaga can be a formidable enemy, threatening to eat naughty young children or cut off the head of the hero. But she also often acts as an agent of change in some folk stories.
In the upcoming episode, Baba Yaga might not be the only antagonist -- or so it seems. We also have a ghost of a teenager who looks sinister and a creepy-looking man that Dean confronts in the hallway of the motel. The episode seems to have dialed up the horror quotient with creaky doors and plenty of 'The Shining-style' hallways. Both Sam and Dean, the grown-up versions, are also subject to quite a few horror movie jump scares as they investigate. As Dean, who looks thoroughly spooked, says, "I've seen this movie before".
Hopefully, this episode will also tie up some loose ends from the previous episode -- like did Castiel really tell Dean about Jack's impending death and also what is Castiel planning to do to protect Jack. There is also the matter of Death playing the grand orchestrator telling the Winchesters they are the messengers of God's destruction. Can she truly be trusted?
'Supernatural' airs on Thursdays on The CW Network at 8:00 pm ET.
