'Supergirl' season 5: J'onn's brother, Lex's sister and the Leviathan could just be too much for Kara to handle

Lex Luthor might be defeated but that doesn't mean Kara will get to rest any time soon. Let's take a look at the villains hinted at for the upcoming season.

When ‘Supergirl’ ended its last season, the show left us with more questions than answers and a hint at the trouble to come. Now with season 5 coming in the fall of 2019, let’s take a look at the villainy in store for Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) in the new season.

Season 4’s last episode, ‘The Quest for Peace’, featured an appearance of the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett). The enigmatic being greeted a hooded warrior who stepped out of a portal onto Kara’s world. The newcomer, whom the Monitor describes as a “phantom”, has just been released from a long imprisonment. The warrior lowers his hood to show his green skin and red eyes, revealing that he is the Martian Manhunter’s brother.

J’onn J’onzz (David Harewood) is probably not going to enjoy this little family reunion as his brother, named Ma’alefa’ak in the comics, believes that he was betrayed by J’onn. In the comics, Ma’alefa’ak, usually just called Malefic for convenience, is a demented psychopath who commits genocide against his own people and constantly plagues the Martian Manhunter. While we don’t know how accurately the show will follow the comics, we can be quite sure that Malefic is not going to be settling his differences with J’onn over a nice cup of Martian tea.

J’onn isn’t the only one in trouble as Kara herself has an imminent betrayal looming on the horizon. Though Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) was ultimately killed by his sister Lena, he managed to reveal one last secret to his sister before taking his last breath: the identity of Supergirl. By now the list of people who know Kara’s secret identity is quite long but Lena, who has so far been a close ally of the Kryptonian superhero, was not amongst them.

Though she hangs out with Kara during game night and assures her that she will “always” be on her team, the deception is bound to cause some conflict in the future. A scene showing Lena smashing a picture she took with Kara suggests that that conflict is probably going to be of the violent kind. Lex’s fate was left completely ambiguous as his body was taken by the Monitor for reasons unknown, but everything points to Lena taking after his legacy of villainy.

But the biggest threat headed for Supergirl is one that she might not stand a chance against. The season 4 finale teased the big bad for the next season: the mysterious organization called Leviathan. Not much is known about Leviathan other than that they seem to have agents hiding in plain sight. The finale revealed that Eve (Andrea Brooks) was secretly working for the organization. She meets an old lady who tells her that she failed her mission before revealing that “Leviathan is everywhere. Leviathan is everyone. And Leviathan is coming.”

When Season 5 rolls in, Kara is going to have a lot on her plate, especially considering the season will be setting up 2019’s crossover event ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’, an event which Supergirl famously does not survive.

Season 5 of 'Supergirl' will arrive on October 6, 2019.
