'Supergirl' Season 5: Leviathan is a fascinating big bad and it deserves the spotlight on the show

It would be a relief if the show's focus remained primarily on Leviathan and watching Supergirl and team taking them down

The fifth season of 'Supergirl' has been a bit of a mixed bag. From the threat of the frightening Leviathan to the constant friction between Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) and Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist), the Crisis and the return of the diabolic Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer), the season has been a bit of a rollercoaster. There is lots happening for sure, but where is everything leading to?

For starters, what's happening with Leviathan? The terror organization was more intimidating when not much was known about it. It's sheer shadowy-ness, omniscience and the mystery that covered it made it a rather intimidating villain. Unfortunately, we don't get to see much of it. The old woman (Patti Allan), who seemed sharp and deadly, was not the head of the organization. What a shame.

Instead, Rama Khan (Mitch Pileggi) is the head. They have been around since the era of the dinosaurs as their ship crash-landed on Earth. They trace their origins back to Jarhanpur, the sister planet of Krypton. Khan has the power to control the Earth and the natural forces. The disasters that have affected the Earth were primarily caused by him.

Things were going swell until human beings decided to evolve and wreaked havoc on the planet. They were after one thing: the Medallion of Acrata, which was in Andrea Rojas's (Julie Gonzalo) possession. Rojas's ex BFF Lena extracted that from her.

However, the Crisis came and turned everything upside down. The most pronounced change was the return of Lex Luthor, a sinister villain who had been killed by his own sister Lena in the earlier seasons. Yet, in the post-Crisis world, things seem to be fumbling and bumbling in the world of 'Supergirl'. Jeremy Jordan's Winn Schott returned for the 'Back To The Future' episodes, where his evil doppelganger was wreaking havoc. The storyline took a surprising twist when the original Toyman redeemed himself and killed the doppelganger and died with him too. It was absurd, owing merely to the fact the original Toyman was a murderous and barbaric person.

Lex is keen to solve the riddle of Leviathan and has some nefarious plans up his sleeve. Lena is going to go along with it. Lex is also using Brainy to help him out. In Episode 12, there was only a small glimpse of the old Leviathan lady, while we had to shuttle between numerous scenes of villainy. Yet, Leviathan will make its presence felt in the next few episodes.

In the comics, Leviathan is different. It is the offshoot of the League of Assassins, led by Talia Al Ghul. The organization is tired that the burden of saving the world rests primarily on the shoulders of superheroes and it wishes to tip the scales. The goals of the organizations in both the comics and the show are to change the power structure on Earth. In the comics, they wish to put humanity in the hands of the people. On the show, they want to take Earth out of humanity's clutches.

It would be a relief if the show's focus remained primarily on Leviathan and watching Supergirl and team taking them down. They deserve to be the big bad of Season 5.

'Supergirl' airs on CW on Sundays at 9pm.
