'Supergirl' Season 5 Episode 7: Lena Luthor breaks Kara's heart and the fandom is in tears
After being teased for over a season, the true face of Leviathan has been revealed this episode, which also finally saw the reconciliation between J'onn (David Harewood) and his brother, Malefic (Phil LaMarr). None of that matters, though, at least as far as the fans seemed to be concerned, as Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) finally lays her cards out on the table and confronts Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) for the years the Kryptonian spent betraying Lena's trust.
All caps status updates were in full swing, as fans did their best to convey the depth of their feelings following that powerful scene between Lena and Kara in the fortress of solitude. As Lena's journey down a darker path progressed this season, fans were expecting a confrontation, but nobody expected it to come this soon - or for it to be as hard-hitting as it was. "LENA IS CRYING KARA IS CRYING I AM CRYING LENA IS YELLING I AM LOSING IT" vents a fan on Twitter, including a clip of the scene that brought out the #Supercorp shippers in tears. "If this is not the most painful scene in the series then I don't know what," another tweet said, also linking to the scene.
Praise was heaped on Katie McGrath's performance - "My god, Katie McGrath... she deserves every award for that scene... but that broke my heart," said one user. Some are not ready for Lena's outright descent into villainy, despite the show having been setting it up all season long. "Lena Luthor pouring her heart out. She can't be a villain. She won't be. I already miss Supercorp. I love them as friends," one tweet lamented.
Many users noted the guilt that Lena's confrontation brought out in Supergirl may have put her in a weaker position in more ways than one, as Supergirl is in a Kryptonite-laced trap from the Fortress that Lena hacked into. "If Lena wanted to kill Kara she could of right in that moment because Kara was so sad & felt so guilty & vulnerable she probably wouldn't of even stopped her from trying," it's been pointed out.
The Crisis may be coming soon, but it's safe to say that fans of 'Supergirl' have their worries set a lot closer to home.
The next episode of 'Supergirl' airs December 1 on the CW.
