'Supergirl' Season 5 Episode 2 review: Lena continues down the dark path while we find out more about the mysterious Leviathan

The Alex-Kelly relationship also gets some screentime as they try and understand each other better. This episode firmly focusses on Lena and her plans to "fix" the world. For now, the Girl of Steel manages to extend the strong run.

This review contains spoilers for 'Supergirl' Season 5 Episode 2 'Stranger Beside Me'

'Supergirl' got off to a strong start in its season opener and the new technology introduced in episode two 'Stranger Beside Me' may go on to become another major threat over the course of the series.

The episode also shows a new surprising direction for James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) as he tells Kara (Melissa Benoist) that he has received an offer to work with the Smithsonian and also an opportunity to run for Senate.

They head to J'onn J'onzz's (David Harewood) house to find him lying semi-conscious. While being treated by the team, he explains his encounter with his brother, Malefic and Brainy (Jesse Rath) reveals that there is a cure for his pain in the future.

Meanwhile, changes continue to ring in at CatCo with Andrea Rojas, the new editor, reassigning Kara to cover fashion. The Leviathan gets a bit more explanation with Eve Teschmacher (Andrea Brooks) waking up in Lena's lab.

This also proves that Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) was the one who snatched her. Eve's attempts to explain more about The Leviathan, however, go in vain.

Kelly Olsen (Azie Tesfai ) tries to help J'onn but only worsens his trauma. When she goes into his consciousness, she realizes that his mind was wiped and that explained the missing memories.

Malefic, meanwhile, is located at the DEO, and Alex, Supergirl, and Brainy go looking for J'onn's brother in a sewer. Kelly, meanwhile, suggests rebuilding J'Onn's memories. The Martian soon discovers that Malefic betrayed his own people and remembers banishing him to the Phantom Zone.

A ticked-off Rojas reassigns Kara to copy editing after realizing that she wasn't on her fashion assignment. She also confronts Lena revealing there are trackers in the Obsidian Lenses and accuses her of stealing the tech.

Meanwhile, Malefic impersonates Alex and fights Supergirl. As the scrimmage continues, the Martian ends up on a roof and impersonates Kelly, however, the real Alex figures it out and shoots him.

It is also revealed that Lena has plans for mapping Eve's brain and installing her AI, Hope, into her transforming Eve into a living version of the AI.

'Stranger Beside Me' offers a look at Lena walking down a darker path. At the moment, it is still unclear whether there is more to all this than just revenge on Kara.

The Leviathan, a mysterious criminal organization has been teased since the previous season and there are bits and pieces of details that are dished out in the episode.

The Alex-Kelly relationship too gets some screentime as they try and understand each other better. This episode firmly focusses on Lena and her plans to "fix" the world. For now, the Girl of Steel manages to extend the strong run.

'Supergirl' airs on Sundays at 9 pm on The CW.
