Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Sunday, February 9, mocked a 21-year-old student at a campaign event in New Hampshire when she asked him about his poor performance in the Iowa Caucuses on February 3.

The former vice president went on to call her a “lying, dog-faced pony soldier” after she questioned his Iowa show and how he could still convince the voters to win the national election in November.

Madison Moore, a student of economics at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, was less than impressed with Biden’s response and said it was "humiliating". She also went on to say that the veteran leader’s inability to answer her question showed how poorly he is doing. Biden finished fourth in the battle of Iowa with less than 16% of the votes. Former South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren led him.

Biden made it worse for himself by saying he quoted late actor John Wayne to utter the phrase as later found to be a misquote as the line belonged to another actor.

While replying to Moore, Biden first asked her whether she had ever voted in a caucus and when she said yes, he refused to be convinced and called her a “lying, dog-faced pony soldier”.

'It was humiliating'

“It was kind of humiliating to be called a liar on national TV by the former vice president. Instead of answering that question straightforward, his immediate response was to attempt to invalidate me by exposing my inexperience,” Moore was quoted as saying by Daily Mail

“He has been performing extremely poorly in this race and the fact that he couldn’t just straight answer my question without bullying or intimidating just exacerbates that fact,” the youngster said, adding: “I am 21-year old college student, like what the hell do I know? Who cares who I am or my experience. Just answer the damn question.” Moore was at the campaign event as part of a student trip, the Macon Telegraph reported.

Biden, who had served as a senator from Delaware for over three decades in the past, has courted controversy a number of times during his campaign trails in Iowa and New Hampshire. He was seen calling an elderly voter a “damn liar” when the latter asked him uncomfortable questions on Hunter Biden and Ukraine. On another occasion, he was seen poking at a supporter who confronted him on the question of climate change.

On yet another occasion, Biden was slammed as a “pervert” by a voter who protested his way of touching women and young girls.

Ppoll shows Biden's alarming fall compared to pre-Iowa times

Meanwhile on Monday, February 10, a new Quinnipiac University poll showed Sanders pulling ahead of Biden in the Democratic primary with 25% as against the latter’s 17%.

Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg was closing in with 15% while Warren got 14%, Buttigieg 10% and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar 4%. It was a big slip for Biden who was leading the lot with 26% in a poll that took place on January 28, ahead of the Iowa Caucuses. Sanders was the second on that occasion with 21%.

Moore’s question touched upon the point that Biden had an advantage since he has been a former vice president and also could spend more time in his campaign in Iowa since some of his senator opponents had to divide their times between the Hawkeye State and Washington as the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump was underway till last week. Biden acknowledged that it was a “good question” before proceeding to mock her.

New polling over the weekend showed Biden was at the fourth position in the Granite State as well and he conceded that people like Sanders and Warren were better-placed since they belong to states neighboring to New Hampshire. But he defended his candidacy to be a heavy one still, saying he was far ahead in terms of support of the black community.
