'Stranger Things' Season 4 doesn't hold back from killing key characters. What it does, however, is suggest is a much darker Volume 2. The finale, spanning over 80 minutes, puts the focus on all the key characters while also hinting at potential deaths. Titled 'The Massacre at Hawkins Lab', the final episode sees Jim Hopper (David Harbour) being rescued by Murray Bauman (Brett Gelman) and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) not just from the Demogorgon, but also from the Russian prison.

Meanwhile, Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Max (Sadie Sink), and Erica (Priah Ferguson) rescue the gang that goes in search of Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), Robin (Maya Hawke), Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Eddie (Joseph Quinn) in the Upside Down. They manage to bring Robin and Eddie back, however, Nancy and Steve are still trapped in the dimension with the former being given a rather detailed origin story of Vecna.

'Stranger Things' season 3 ending explained: What happens to Eleven and the Mind Flayer?

Vecna is actually revealed to be One (001), the first-ever experiment of Matthew Modine's Dr Brenner. However, he develops an acute understanding of his condition and is then put on a suppressor. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) acquires his ability as part of Brenner's experiments, proving to be a more effective and improved version. At the other end, Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), and Will (Noah Schnapp) enlist Dustin's girlfriend Suzie (Gabriella Pizzolo) to help hack their way into the lab where Eleven is held captive.

Who dies in the finale of 'Stranger Things' Season 4?

Dr Brenner and One are revealed to be dead in the finale. It's pretty much a scenario that the scientist puts Eleven in, in a bid to regain her powers. One manages to kill all the kids in the lab in the most grotesque of ways, and Eleven finally finds her abilities that she uses to decimate the first-ever super-powered individual. As she banishes him through a portal, One sheds his human avatar and becomes Vecna — the dreaded wizard who preys on people going through immense trauma.

Barring the vision Eleven sees in the form of Brenner's death, most of the major players are still alive, but safe to say it won't be the case for long. With Nancy under Vecna's spell, she just might be one of the victims, or it remains to be seen if Steve will be a casualty. Dmitri (Tom Wlaschiha) or Murray might be one of the characters to kick the bucket as well. At this point, 'Stranger Things' does provide a dangerous villain, but the deaths that bring a gulp in the throat haven't happened thus far.

Only time will tell how Volume 2 pans out.

'Stranger Things' Season 4 is streaming on Netflix.
