British fashion designer Stella McCartney is being mocked on social media for praising actor Joaquin Phoenix after the latter's pledge to wear the same tuxedo to all award events this year. The designer took to Twitter and shared a picture of the 'Joker' actor holding the Golden Globe award he won for his performance as Arthur Fleck in the highly-acclaimed movie.

McCartney, who had custom-made Phoenix’s suit for the ceremony, lauded the actor as she wrote: "This man is a winner… wearing custom Stella because he chooses to make choices for the future of the planet. He has also chosen to wear this same Tux for the entire award season to reduce waste. I am proud to join forces with you... x Stella."

The host of this year's Golden Globe, Ricky Gervais, had warned the stars in attendance to not use the platform for making political speeches as he claimed most of them "didn't have a clue about real people". Phoenix, however, dismissed the warning as he touched on climate change emergency and pointed out the celebrities' use of private jets during his acceptance speech.

Shortly after the designer praised the actor on social media, many slammed her statement, saying that her tweet was "out of touch."

One Twitter user wrote: "B***** to the fireman, the police, ambulance services, soldiers, charity workers, doctors, nurses, carers... no the real hero is a man who wears one tux for a whole season."

While another said: "I wore the same boots throughout ALL of Desert Storm working on the flight deck of the USS Saratoga! I realize now just how gauche that was."

"He's wearing a suit more than once. Ghandi, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela take a seat a new hero is in town," another social media user added while taking a swipe at the British designer's statement.

One user also took a dig at Phoenix: "What an amazing sacrifice first the request to not constantly use private jets and now this."

"What planet does Stella McCartney live on? Praising Joaquin Phoenix for helping to save the future of our planet, by choosing to wear the same Custom Stella Tuxedo throughout the current award's season. Just how out of touch with reality are these virtue signaling celebs," another user wrote.
