JJ Abrams makes 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' a whole lot weirder, claims Kylo Ren and Rey shared a sibling relationship

The movie has been bashed by fans and critics alike and now director JJ Abrams just made it even more messed up by suggesting that Ben Solo/Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) shared more of a 'brother-sister' relationship than a romantic one.

'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' was supposed to bring the Skywalker Saga to a grand conclusion and it did so in the most unsatisfactory way possible. The movie has been bashed by fans and critics alike and now director JJ Abrams just made it even more messed up by suggesting that Ben Solo / Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) shared more of a "brother-sister" relationship than a romantic one.

Spoilers ahead for 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker'

In the final moments of the movie, we saw Ben sacrifice his life to save Rey and just before he died, the two shared a passionate kiss. Now Abrams is suggesting that that kiss wasn't actually a romantic one but a brother-sister moment between the two characters, according to a report by Comicbook

"There's as much of a brother and sister thing with Rey and Kylo Ren as there is romantic,” Abrams explained. “So it's not literally a sexually/romantic kind of thing. It's more like they're just bound together in this crazy, spiritual way. Again, felt romantic to me."

As if that wasn't weird enough, Abrams also compared the relationship between Rey and Ben to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) in 'Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back', saying, "It's like John Williams... when he first wrote the Luke theme,” he continued. “It was a romantic theme for Luke and Leia. That was kind of what he was thinking because he didn't know where it was going."

Luke and Leia's kiss happened at a time when neither character knew that they were related but that didn't stop fans from being completely grossed out by the scene in hindsight. With these comments, Abrams has ensured that we'll all be treating the Ben-Rey kiss the same way for years to come.

'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' released in theaters on December 20.
