'Star Wars' Disney+ spin-off on Obi-Wan Kenobi could explore the Jedi Master's relationship with Owen Lars
The upcoming 'Star Wars' spin-off series on Obi-Wan Kenobi, which was announced to be coming to Disney+ during D23 Expo 2019 has the potential to bring back a lot of great characters from the past of the galaxy far, far away. One character in particular who would be interesting to see back on screen is Owen Lars, Darth Vader's brother and the man who raised Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on Tatooine.
That last time we saw Luke's Uncle Owen was at the end of 'Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith' when Obi-Wan delivered the infant Skywalker to his relative (played by Joel Edgerton in the film and Phil Brown in the original trilogy) so that the child could grow up far from the eyes of the Empire. Owen raised Luke Skywalker without telling him anything about the Force or the Jedi, not just for his protection but also because he blamed the Jedi Order for the "death" of his half-brother Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen).
Unlike his brother, Owen had no interest in leaving his homestead or the life of a moisture farmer, despite all the hardships that he had to endure on Tatooine. The 'Star Wars' comics have revealed that unbeknownst to Owen and Luke, they were shielded from most of the dangers of Tatooine by Obi-Wan, who chose to remain on the planet to keep an eye on Luke, even though Owen refused to let him have anything to do with the boy.
Though we learned of his purchase of R2-D2 and C-3PO and the deaths of both him and his wife Beru Whitesun in 'Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope', he has plenty of backstory that hasn't made it to screens yet. It would be quite fun to see Owen interacting with Obi-Wan in the years between the Jedi Master's arrival on Tatooine and Owen's death at the hands of Imperial stormtroopers. Ewan McGregor has been confirmed to be returning to the role of Obi-Wan and seeing him joined by Joel Edgerton's Owen would be a total treat for the fans.
The planned Obi-Wan series is currently untitled. It will start production in 2020 so fans can hope to see it land on Disney+ sometime in 2021.
