There is a lot of eccentric volume and strong lines this Spring-Summer 2020 as we reinvent fashion across decades stretching all the way back to the 16th century. It is like we can't decide what sort of nostalgia we are craving this time around.

But this is a blessing in disguise, especially since there is that 90s minimalism thrown into the mix as well. If you are a minimalist, chances are you already have a strong sense of style that you stick to, favoring classic silhouettes and colors. But if you want to update your wardrobe while still keeping it simple and practical, here's your guide to picking a few key pieces that will keep you looking on-trend.

The trench coat

The voluminous, belted, double-breasted coats in camel hues stormed the runways for spring-summer 2020. Picking a light jacket in this style when you are spoilt for choice is a no-brainer. Pick from brands like Gucci, Dior, and Louis Vuitton that favored the more classic silhouette, rather than mess with perfection. But if you are in the mood to experiment, there were coats with modern twists from fabric like faux leather to colors other than the classic beige -- from metal grey to lemon yellow. If you have a mostly monochrome wardrobe, a pop of color with an updated trench isn't a bad idea.

Trouser suits

There was the whiff of the 70s in the suits sent down runways. Minimalists can give the suit shorts a miss though because that seems like it won't last beyond this season. But you can pick up thigh-length blazers with interesting collar variations to add a bit of excitement to your wardrobe. If you want to invest in some sharply-tailored trouser suits, now is the time. White suiting seemed a particular favorite. If you don't want to go the whole hog on the power dressing, definitely pick up vests and more formal waistcoats, another staple that designers seemed to favor this season. You had some in classic black and other more quirky colors and patterns.

Knitwear

Is there anything more chic and versatile than knitwear? Take your pick this season from tank tops, knit skirts, camis, cardigans, knit dresses, and even knit shorts that channel '90s minimalism and comfort. These are wardrobe staples that can be dressed up or down and flatter the figure too. This is your chance to stock up on the classic fitted ribbed turtleneck with leggings combo or a matching cami-cardigan set.

Polka dots

Nothing says summer like polka dots. This print was all over the runaways on flirty dresses, shirts and skirts. You could opt for the black and white combo that never goes out of style. Or you could live dangerously with the brown and white combo or a blue and white number -- both color combinations are on-trend when it comes to polka dots. This is one trend that actually hit the streets before it hit the runaways, proof of the many ways you can wear this print -- a boon to a minimalist.

Midi skirts

The midi skirt is the holy grail for someone looking for a practical skirt that works as office wear as well as more casual settings. There are quite a few styles to choose from -- starting from colored leather ones to the all-time favorite knit versions to lighter cloth fabrics. Also, you can choose from both flared and fitted versions -- there was plenty of both in spring-summer collections this year. If you are willing to flash a bit of leg, quite a few designers experimented with slit hems, so stock up!
