South African soap opera '7de Laan' faces social media backlash after it aired its first interracial kiss in 18 years of the show
A long-running South African soap opera came under fire from numerous quarters of social media this past week after it aired what was its first-ever interracial kissing scene. '7de Laan,' a series set in and around the fictional 7de Laan in the suburb of Hillside, Johannesburg, has aired more than 4,000 episodes since it first premiered in 2000 and has proven popular amongst the country's viewers, but saw its actors at the center of a storm after they shared what was an innocent kiss.
According to the Daily Mail, actors Carina Nel, who plays Alexa on the show, and Nicholas Nkuna, who plays Fikani, have found themselves on the receiving end of threats and hateful messages on social media after they shared a kiss on the episode which aired on the SABC 2 network on January 15.
