'Sorry For Your Loss' Season 2 Episode 8 sees Leigh and Danny clash over memories of Matt as Jules and Tommy get intimate
Spoilers ahead for 'Sorry for your Loss' Season 2 Episode 8 'Drumroll, Please'
When Leigh Shaw (Elizabeth Olsen) and Danny Greer (Jovan Adepo) decided to act on their mutual attraction in the last episode, it ended in a giddy, spur-of-the-moment romantic getaway. In the heady first moments of the romance, neither of them was inclined to talk about why they had got together.
Even though Danny had misgivings about why Leigh had decided to come to him, she soothed his anxiety with kisses rather than words. However, in 'Drumroll, Please', the eighth episode of season 2, Danny can no longer ignore his fears when Leigh tells him about dreaming about Matt, right after hooking up with him.
Danny accuses her of using him to "get to Matt" while Leigh says his anger towards his brother could be why he's screwing his brother's widow. These are harsh words but needed to be said if the two are ever going to make a proper go at this nascent, budding relationship.
Their memories of Matt are radically different and both are grieving in different ways. Leigh remembers a perfect husband who "had some stuff to deal with" while Danny remembers him as a "shitty person" who was depressive and brought everyone down with him.
Leigh, understandably, is upset at what she thinks is Danny's way of belittling Matt's memory to be with her. She is unaware of why Danny has a more complete and less idealized memory of his brother.
Leigh still doesn't know that Matt was on the verge of bailing on their marriage to explore his feelings towards Nina (Khalilah Joi), his colleague. It was Danny who had talked him out of it and suggested a trip to New Orleans as a way to "reconnect" with Leigh.
Matt had come home and used Danny's words, describing the city's charms, to get Leigh excited about the trip. Even now, Leigh remembers the trip as one of Matt's grand romantic gestures -- not knowing Danny was instrumental in saving her marriage.
She doesn't know yet (unlike the audience) that in some ways Danny might be even more perfect for her than Matt ever was. At the beginning of the episode, neither of them felt comfortable discussing their relationship with others.
Leigh doesn't tell Drew, her editor, and non-judgemental confidante, preferring to discuss her essay about her dream about Matt. Danny doesn't tell his mom. Leigh even lies to her sister, Jules (Kelly Marie Tran), about who she had gone out of town with.
But the irony is how perfect the two are for each other. However, Leigh does tell Jules about Danny later, and also goes back to him with a peace offering that helps soothe things over for now.
The only thing is, will Danny ever be able to tell Leigh about why his memories of Matt clash with her perfect, idealized memory of him? Jules also scores this episode with Tommy (Briana Venskus) when they find themselves alone in Jules' house.
Their chemistry is evident when they have sex but as they cuddle afterward, Tommy (Briana Venskus) confesses she has a prison record for assault. It is a reality check for Jules, who tentatively asks for details.
Tommy is honest, telling Jules she had a lot of rage, mainly because of her Catholic family's rejection of her sexual identity. This rage poured out against a straight man being douchey in the gay bar she was at.
It gives us a little more insight into Tommy's spiritual path and how therapy and religion helped her become a changed woman and deal with her anger issues. Jules, who feels safe with her (as she tells Leigh later), chooses to believe Tommy's self-assessment that she is no longer the person she used to be.
While we are rooting for this couple, the teaser for next week's episode shows there is trouble ahead. When Jules offers Tommy a job at the fitness center, Tommy sees it as a sign that Jules thinks she is not good enough and is a "fixer-upper".
Leigh also treads dangerous territory wanting to devote her next essay about her relationship with Danny. Given how new the relationship is, we wonder if that is such a good idea.
