'Somebody sedate me': Fans overwhelmed after 'Grey's Anatomy' shares Ellen Pompeo's farewell still

Pompeo was a staple on the show, after which the show shifted to a more ensemble format

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The nineteen years of Ellen Pompeo's Meredith Grey on 'Grey's Anatomy,' first being an intern then a resident and finally, the chief has been a wild ride, it surely had its best and worst days. Every fan of 'Grey's Anatomy' is extremely emotional, and why not? They have been with the series since James Pickens Jr.'s Chief Richard Webber introduced the set of newbie interns to their arena and gave them a starting line. Chandra Wilson's Miranda Bailey had five interns under her wings, which consisted of Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and lastly, George O'Malley (T. R. Knight). 

It is time we say the last OG intern goodbye. Ellen Pompeo will last appear (as a series regular) in the seventh episode of season 19, "I'll Follow the Sun" which will air on February 23, 2023. She will continue to do the voiceover at the beginning and end of each episode.

'Grey's Anatomy' official Twitter page shared a still image of Ellen Pompeo's Meredith Grey surrounded by all of her colleagues who are toasting to her at her farewell. The caption reads, "Every path we've taken has led us to this moment. Don't miss the Grey's Anatomy return Thursday at 9/8c on ABC & Stream on Hulu." 

'Pay my therapy bill'

It was moments after the post surfaced that fans started pouring in about they are not prepared for this. A fan said, "The last episode of greys anatomy for me I’m not watching after Meredith leaves no one is worth watching after she’s gone." A fan wrote, "My last episode till the season finale. Back to the start for me. Even if characters come back no mer no greys." A fan tweeted, "my therapist will be hearing about this btw," while another added, "PAY MY THERAPY BILL." A fan commented, "Somebody sedate me," while another added, "I’m not ready for her to go."

Safe to assume there is going to be a lot of fans who would need to sit with the tissue box. Regardless, the official synopsis of the episode reads, "On Meredith's last day at Grey Sloan, the doctors plan a goodbye surprise and Nick confronts her about the future of their relationship. The interns compete to scrub in on a groundbreaking procedure. And Richard asks Teddy an important question."

New episodes return Thursday, February 23 at 9/8c on ABC and Stream on Hulu.
