The real reason for Ellen Pompeo quitting
Last year during an interview with Drew Barrymore, Pompeo disclosed, "I’m 53. My brain is like scrambled eggs," the actress explained. "I gotta do something new or I’m literally gonna turn into like, you can’t do the New York Times crossword puzzle every single day. Who is the last OG surgical intern to leave the show?
When the medical drama TV series started in 2005, it followed the life of Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), who was starting her acceptance into the surgical residency program at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital. During her time as an intern, Grey works alongside fellow physicians Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and lastly, the fan favorites George O'Malley (T. R. Knight), who each struggle to balance their personal lives with hectic schedules and stressful residency requirements.
During the first 6 seasons, O'Malley, and Stevens all depart the series. Just after four years in season 10, Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang says goodbye to her co-workers she has come to know and love including Owen, Derek, and Meredith. After six years of Yang's departure, Justin Chambers' Alex Karev ultimately leaves Jo for Izzie and moves to Kansas to be with her and their children in Season 16. Finally, in Season 19, Ellen Pompeo's Meredith Grey chose to bid goodbye to her beloved hospital.
Pompeo's farewell episode as a series regular airs on February 23 when 'Grey's Anatomy' returns for the second half of its nineteenth season.
