Social media pressuring young children into changing gender, director of NHS clinic says
A director at England's only specialist National Health Service (NHS) clinic for youngsters, on Monday, said that social media is fuelling an increase in the number of children seeking treatment to change their gender.
The director, Dr Polly Carmichael, also said that the service was under pressure from lobby groups to "fast-track" children into transitioning without giving them proper advice, according to the Daily Mail. Carmichael's statement came after another director quit his position at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, following a report stating that the service was "not fit for purpose."
Psychotherapist Marcus Evans reportedly quit because he was concerned with the "serious concerns with what is going on in the gender identity world." Evans, who had been with the organization for 30 years, said that offering the "quick solution" to children of allowing them to start with their medical treatment to change gender was "exactly the opposite of what needs to be done."
