KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: 'Skywalkers: A Love Story' started streaming on Netflix on July 19, 2024. The pulsating adventure documentary chronicles the story of two gravity-defying rooftop artists Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus who want to climb one of the tallest buildings Merdeka 118.
The Russian couple who are brought together by their common love for climbing skyscrapers without a harness have a tough time balancing their lives and a hobby that has become their profession.
They have to navigate geopolitical events like the coronavirus pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war that has created a financial crunch for them. Their only hope of salvaging their relationship and getting their recognition back is Merdeka 118.
Angela and Ivan begin the preparation for their climb
Angela and Ivan have had a topsy-turvy journey where they have felt like their love for each other has died after scaling many a peak together. Angela is suffering from panic attacks and their trust in each other has dwindled.
However, the Merdeka preparations will need them to trust each other as they plan to perform a daring gymnastic stunt on the top of one of the biggest towers in the world.
They finally begin the climb after finding each other's trust again but their trust and skill will be put to test during the climb.
Angela and Ivan have to hide in a cave to escape security
Angela and Ivan get spotted on a security camera and the security guards are alerted by their presence. They were careful for the longest time and chose the day of the Football World Cup final that would keep the guards busy.
However, with them being spotted, they have to hide themselves in a makeshift cave for 19 hours. They somehow gather the courage to survive this and get back to the climb.
Once they get back to the climb they find it tough as their lungs are covered in dust and the climb is extremely long. With locked doors everywhere, Ivan begins to lose hope but Angela champions him as they find a way to the top.
Angela and Ivan finally perform the daring stunt
Angela and Ivan find their way up to the top as they complete the daring climb but the hardest part is doing the acrobatic pose as failure would mean falling off into the abyss.
However, Angela finds strength in knowing that Ivan will never drop her and she trusts him completely with the body. They find their dwindling love again in the most vulnerable situation as they complete the acrobatic stunt.
Angela feels safe in Ivan’s hands and realizes that Ivan will always love her and they continue their life performing the most daring stunts all over the world.
They disguise themselves as construction workers and make their way out of the country. They finally post the video as it gets streamed on Times Square in New York.
