'Shrill' Season 2 Episode 8: Fran throws herself a party to celebrate her single life in the finale
This story contains major spoilers for Season 2 Episode 8 of Hulu's 'Shrill' titled 'HR'
The finale episode of Season 2 of 'Shrill' begins with The Thorn conducting a sexual harassment meeting with the entire staff of the magazine because everyone knows that Annie Easton (Aidy Bryant) and Ryan (Luka Jones) had sex in the office.
This whole charade doesn't prove to be one bit useful as the staff of The Thorn is distracted by the littlest things and Ryan happens to conclude any further discussion by stupidly trying to separate himself from the situation.
It is a failed attempt as Annie now realizes that Ryan's attitude to this whole scandal is immature and nonchalant. He might truly believe that he loves her, but Ryan and Annie's relationship has her playing his mother — caring for him, telling him what to do, what not to do, as she points out later in the episode.
However, Annie is a mature person who wants to be with someone who is equally mature if not more, someone who is an adult, someone who can gauge the consequences of his words and actions.
Ryan might be pure and simple of heart but he is also dumb and can barely tell left from right. So while he did not intend for all of this to happen, it has happened and now he doesn't know how to handle it or make amends.
Elsewhere, Fran (Lolly Adefope) throws herself a little intimate party where she intends to celebrate her singledom. Since her break-up with Vic (Melanie Field), Fran took the decision to take it slow, become celibate and discover her true self.
The Season 2 finale of 'Shrill' hints at new beginnings for both Annie and Fran — with Annie parting ways with Ryan and Fran realizing that she doesn't need to be dependent on a relationship instead she must concentrate on herself, celebrating the life she is living and the future it holds.
