'Shrill' Season 2 Episode 7: Annie feels she must push her potential further in her professional and love life
This story contains major spoilers for 'Shrill' Season 2 Episode 7 'Salon'
Gabe Parrish (John Cameron Mitchell) invites Annie Easton (Aidy Bryant) to his monthly salon, where he invites people of culture for an intellectual evening. An excited Annie finds out that the publisher of The Thorn, Sheila (Illeana Douglas) is going to be present at the salon and is keen to strike up a conversation with her.
At the salon, Annie meets the publisher, who expresses her fascination for Annie's article that she wrote after going rogue from The Thorn. Woman to woman, however, Sheila also offers a professional suggestion to Annie to not fully trust Gabe because he might be really good at what he does, but he is also narcissistic, which means that it might look like he is helping her but he is really helping himself.
Annie now realizes that she has been selling herself short in her professional life. She has the talent and the vision to bring about a change and produce exceptional content — even Sheila sees it — but she has been keeping herself back.
Perhaps Annie also realizes how different Ryan (Luka Jones) and she are. So the episode begins with the two having sex in the office of The Thorn. Annie instructs him to not tell anyone about this, but people in the office find out. And when it news reaches Annie, she is not only livid but hurt for Ryan leaked out an intimate detail about their relationship.
Add to that the fact that at the salon, Ryan was only eager to leave, pestering Annie to leave for something called a Burger League, butting into conversations, acting inappropriately. Frankly, Annie should have known that Ryan is not the type of person who belongs at a gathering like the salon.
Now that Annie realises she must push herself further in her personal and professional life, what is next for her? Knowing Annie, she will definitely take the next step and do whatever it is that will get her closer to her goal.
