‘Shrek 5’ gets exciting cast update with ‘SNL’ and ‘Superman’ stars in key roles
'Shrek 5' has a new update on Thanksgiving Day. Latest casting updates for the fifth instalment see 'Superman' star Skyler Gisondo and 'SNL's Marcello Hernández lending their voices as Shrek and Fiona’s sons, Farkle and Fergus. They will now join a star-studded lineup featuring Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. Also in the mix is 'Euphoria' star Zendaya as their daughter, Felicia.
The latest is helmed by the franchise's known names in Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn. The latter has previously directed 'Shrek 2' and 'Madagascar 2'. Dohrn has written for the second and third films, along with voicing Rumpelstiltskin in 'Shrek Forever After'. The movie is set to release on June 30, 2027.
Earlier, Murphy teased the fifth instalment. According to THR, "I’ve always said I would do Shrek forever," he said. "Donkey is a great character to play. I love the whole cast. So I was excited when it was like, “Hey, they’re doing another one,” and they want to do a Donkey one, too. I’m totally into it. I come in too hot, every vocal session."
He also spoke about how the role would see him sapped. "You have a headache after a Shrek session," the actor said. "The donkey has a lot of singing. You’re on 10, and you’re doing it over and over again. The great thing, though, is it’s appreciated. Everybody loves the movie. Nothing’s worse than working really hard on something, and doing makeup and sweat and all this shit, and then you put it out, and they’d be like, 'Two thumbs down.' You go, 'I was in the makeup chair for 50 hours!'"
Previously, he shared a major update on the Donkey spinoff in development. Per Deadline: "We’re doing a Donkey one, and that’ll be three years from now, but we’re about two years into Shrek 5. Still in the booth and about to start Donkey in September. Donkey’s going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys,” he continued. “They’ve written this funny story. We’re doing that, starting that in September."
For now, it's a wait as 'Shrek 5' is still a good couple of years away. Donkey will likely see a release date around 2028.
