Pregnant 19-year-old Shamima Begum who fled Britain to join ISIS could be prevented from returning: UK Home Secretary

Begum made headlines four years ago after she fled the UK from Gatwick Airport to Turkey along with her friends Kadiza Sultana and Amira Abase
UPDATED FEB 15, 2019

Soon after the report of 19-year-old Shamima Begum wanting to return to the UK came out, Britain's Home Secretary Sajid Javid issued a warning saying he will block the return of all the Britons who traveled to the Middle East to join the Islamic State (ISIS).

Javid's comments came amid the debate over whether Begum should be allowed to come back to Britain. Begum made headlines four years ago after she fled the UK from Gatwick Airport to Turkey along with her friends Kadiza Sultana and Amira Abase. The trio reportedly told their parents they were going out for the day.

Begum, who is now 19 years old and pregnant, was recently tracked down to a refugee camp in Northern Syria where, while talking to The Times, she said: "All I want to do is come back to Britain." Begum's first two children died from illness and malnutrition and she is now concerned about her unborn child. She reportedly married a Dutch ISIS fighter named Yago Riedijk three weeks after she arrived in Syria.
