LONDON, ENGLAND: We had reservations when Michael Caleo decided to develop a prequel to Jonathan Glazer's 'Sexy Beast', which was released in 2000.

The critically acclaimed film features Ray Winstone as retired criminal Gal Dove and Ben Kingsley as sociopath gangster Don Logan.

24 years after the release of the film, its prequel premiered on Paramount+ on January 25, 2024.

The prequel that we never asked for, disappointed us initially.

From the characters' tiresome accents to their forced attempts to match the original stars, the worn-out gangster plot, and the lackluster tone, the series fell short of our expectations. Despite the makers' genuine efforts to evoke nostalgia, the transition felt awkward.

However, those who stuck with the series, experience a shift in perception. In the last four episodes, the series gains momentum and you begin to like James McArdle and Emun Elliott's version of Gal Dove and Don Logan.

Supporting cast adds life to 'Sexy Beast' (2024)

Beyond the lead actors, the supporting cast adds depth to the series. Stephen Moyer as Teddy Bass and Tamsin Greig as Cecilia Logan bring sinister and evil nuances respectively.

Clea Martin's portrayal of Ann Marie Dove generates dislike, while Sarah Greene shines in her role as Deedee Harrison, contributing significantly to the series with her character's evolution.

The romance between Gal and Deedee feels too dreamy to be real. Yet their chemistry leaves you in awe.

'Sexy Beast' emerges from its sluggish start

The acting and music are commendable. 'Sexy Beast' feels like a blend of 'The Sopranos' and Guy Ritchie's style of storytelling, delivering gripping plot twists as the characters navigate London's criminal underworld.

Despite sharing the same names and characters as the original film, the Paramount+ series offers a refreshing take. While the movie focuses on Ben Kingsley, the series positions Gal as the true sexy beast, with Don appearing as his sidekick.

Elliott's portrayal of Don lacks the ruthlessness that earned Kingsley an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Season 1 concludes on a cliffhanger with the potential for a second season, making it worthwhile for viewers who manage to complete the first season.

'Sexy Beast' Season 1 is currently available to stream on Paramount+.
