Mary Kay Letourneau feels 'lost' after split from husband Vili Fualaau who was only 12 when she had sex with him
The end of the bizarre romance between Mary Kay Letourneau, 58, and Vili Fualaau, 36, has left Letourneau feeling lost about life, according to reports. The relationship that caught the eye of the whole world, after she was sent to prison in 1997 for raping her student. The much-publicized relationship came to an end late last year and now Letourneau is "trying to pick up the pieces and move on,” a source close to Letourneau said.
"She’s feeling kind of lost. She’s not sure what to do next," the source told People. The relationship started unraveling in 2017, after Fualaau filed for legal separation. They tried to work things out until February 2019 but it just didn't take off.
They've managed to figure out the financial decisions of the split, said the source. “Basically, what’s hers is hers, and what’s his is his. She has her assets and debts, he has his assets and debts. And going forward, any debt that each of them accrues is theirs alone. Everything is split up.”
The two started their relationship when Fualaau was 12-years-old and she was teaching him in sixth grade. They started having sex soon and by the time he was 15 years old, she had become pregnant twice with his children. She was sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a child - but that didn't stop them from tying the knot.
When she was released from prison, he had become an adult and the two got the restraining order dropped and got hitched in 2005. But "the intimacy was gone" and they had started sleeping in different rooms before the split.
"That’s not to say they didn’t love each other, but it wasn’t what it used to be. For years, there was hope it would work. There was hope up until the time where it was clear that the hope had faded away," said the source.
Even after the split, Letourneau and Fualaau lived together as they parent their two daughters, Georgia and Audrey.
But now, the couple is figuring out life after separation. They no longer live together — their landlord filed paperwork to evict them from the home where they had been living.
“She has her place and he has his,” the source said. “It’s completely separate, and now she’s facing life as a single woman pushing 60 years old. It’s not what she wanted, but it’s her reality.”
And is there a chance for reconciliation? “I don’t think so,” says the insider. “This time, it’s really over.”
