Bui Van Phu: Sex offender, 55, arrested for attempted murder after he PUNCHED diner outside restaurant

FORDHAM HEIGHTS, BRONX: Police have released shocking footage showing a diner following another restaurant patron outside before brutally beating him in a wordless attack and subsequently fracturing his skull. This incident took place on August 12, Friday in the Bronx. The New York City Police Department has launched a probe and released the video of the attack. Later, on the same day, Bui Van Phu, 55, a registered sex offender from the same place, was arrested in connection with the unprovoked assault and is being charged with attempted murder. 

At 10:45 pm, police were called to reports of a 52-year-old man being assaulted in front of the Fuego Tipico restaurant on 163 East 188 Street. The victim was rushed to a hospital after he was found unconscious and unresponsive on the ground after the attack. Horrifying surveillance video captured the moment Phu put on a pair of gloves and swung with great force, hitting the victim in the back of the head.

The 52-year-old was knocked out immediately and he fell to the ground, hitting his head on the concrete. The victim sustained a skull fracture, a broken cheekbone and bleeding in the brain, with EMS rushing him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi. Phu was wearing a black t-shirt and black pants, and left the restaurant shortly after the victim, who was chatting with other individuals. 



 

According to Daily Mail, the NYPD claimed that "without prior conversation or altercation", Phu punched the victim in the face, before returning to the restaurant and later to parts unknown, authorities added. Cops are asking for anyone with information about the incident to come forward. 

The investigation into the brutal attack is ongoing and the victim is in a critical but stable condition. Phu was previously convicted in March 1995 of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree. A NYPD spokesperson said, "It was reported to police that on Friday, August 12, 2022, at approximately 22.45 hours, police responded to a 911 call of a male assaulted in front of the Fuego Tipico Restaurant located at 163 Eat 188 Street. Upon arrival, responding officers discovered a 52-year-old male victim unconscious and unresponsive on the ground with trauma to his head. Upon further investigation, the victim exited the restaurant, stopped and observed several individuals talking, at which time an individual exited the restaurant put on a pair of gloves and positioned himself behind the victim."

The spokesperson further added, "Without prior conversation or altercation, the individual punched the victim in the face before returning back into the restaurant and later to parts unknown. The victim sustained a skull fracture, broken cheek bone and bleeding on his brain. EMS responded to the scene and transported the victim to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he is listed critical but stable condition, the investigation is ongoing. The individual is described as an adult male, medium complexion, medium build and partially balding. He was last seen wearing black pants, a black t-shirt and gloves." 

Although Phu is now in police custody, the victim’s brother says he still worries about why the attack happened. "I don't understand why that happened to him,” said the victim’s brother. “When I saw the video, my brother was just standing and no doing nothing with nobody, he was getting ready to go home," Bronx News reported.
