‘Sex Education’ Season 3 Episode 6: Hope wrecks Lily’s belief in front of full school

Hope gets really angry with students not trying to follow the new rules, so she publicly shames them to lower their confidence

There have been a lot of changes in Moordale Secondary School since Hope (Jemima Kirke) has taken the position of a new headmistress. Hope is trying to turn the school into an elite institution where students talk about their future and not sex. However, the students of Moordale are very stubborn and then believe they have the right to know about safe sex and their anatomy.

So, some of the students have been giving Hope a hard time in school. Lily (Tanya Reynolds) has written a story about “alien sex” and sent it to one of the story-writing competitions. Meanwhile, Cal (Dua Saleh) has not been giving a flying f**k about Hope’s warning to wear the appropriate school dress. Lastly, she believes that Adam Groff is unhygienic and doesn’t care about the health of his peers.

She gets agitated and calls the entire school into the auditorium. She called Lily, Cal, and Adam on the stage and publicly humiliates them. Hope hands out each of them a placard and tells them to read loudly in front of the school. Cal’s placard read, “I’m a slovenly troublemaker who doesn’t care about my peers.” Meanwhile, Adam’s placard stated, “I am unhygienic and put my peers at risk.”

However, it was Lily’s placard that hurt everyone and made her feel so shitty about herself. When Lily is handed out the placard, she says that her story wasn’t dirty. To which, Hope replies, “Then, why is everybody laughing at you?” This shatters her and she is forced to read her placard, which said, “I wrote dirty and disgusting words which have brought shame on my peers.”

Their phones were taken away and Hope warned every other student not to talk to them. Also, the trio is not allowed to remove the placard from their necks until they are told to.
Anwar was suspended for a week after he stood up for Adam and defended him. The entire scenario has completely broken Lily and her aspirations. Lily was already considered to be a freak by most of people just because her imagination was a little different. But this incident has made her go into a shell and when her best friend Ola comes to talk with her, she refuses to talk.

The whole episode makes us realize how public humiliation can ruin a child and his or her aspirations. It doesn’t matter if they are different, people should embrace it. But thinking of making them feel worse about them is absolutely wrong and that’s why we see so many suicides among younger people because they are constantly bullied for who they are.
