'Secret Invasion' Episode 1 Review: Does [SPOILER] die? Disney+ series opens on a devastating note
Spoilers for 'Secret Invasion' Episode 1
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The much-awaited 'Secret Invasion' Episode 1 is here and all we can say is that the Skrulls are not here to play. Before this addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe even began, a few beloved characters were set to return, especially Nick Fury, Talos and Maria Hill. Fans have been looking forward to seeing them for a while now, but how long are they even going to be around?
If you haven't read the comics and are watching 'Secret Invasion' Episode 1, then you are in for a surprise. When it comes to finding a home for themselves, they have their minds and hearts set on Earth, and nothing will make them budge. In addition, they will do absolutely anything to make it happen, even if that means killing a main character, who might not be as centric to 'Secret Invasion' as one would have thought.
Who dies in 'Secret Invasion' Episode 1?
The trailers and featurettes of 'Secret Invasion' have been ruthless, dark, and mysterious, but a main character’s death in the very first episode is still quite a shock. 'Secret Invasion' has already made it clear that it is no 'Loki' or 'WandaVision'. Toward the end of the first episode, the Skrulls have begun their invasion. A terrorist attack amidst a huge crowd is just the place to start. With shapeshifting and external gear in their arsenal, the Skrulls are way ahead already.
As the bombs go off, there is havoc everywhere. Nick Fury seems to have lost his charm just a little as he finds it difficult to keep up, unsure which face he can trust, because anyone can be Skrull. Amidst all this, Maria Hill gets shot by Fury...who isn't really Fury. It's actually Gravik, the leader of the New Skrullos who shapeshifts into Fury and delivers the fatal shot that kills fan-favorite Hill, played by Cobie Smulders. Hill’s last memory is of her long-term friend and companion Fury shooting her to death, even if it's not really him.
Could Hill come back in ‘Secret Invasion’?
The first episode of ‘Secret Invasion’ has established that Hill’s death won’t be the last of the series considering how strong the Skrulls are. It is highly unlikely that Hill returns in ‘Secret Invasion’ unless it is a flashback of some sort, or a memory that Fury has, which is possible. Fans have a week to recover from this shocking death before the next episode of ‘Secret Invasion’ rolls onto their screens. For now, Hill remains dead, but this is the MCU, and absolutely anything can happen.
Hill has often been a side character in all her appearances when it comes to Marvel, but ‘Secret Invasion’ had some promise of her being a bigger ally in this Disney+ mini-series. Call it misleading or just the beginning of the end, but the Skrulls have officially taken over Earth. Fury will barely have time to mourn his friend before he starts picking up the pieces.
