'Schitt's Creek' Season 6 Finale Ending Explained: Just as the Roses part ways, the town’s fortunes improve

The wedding of David and Patrick - while not going off without a hitch - was nonetheless a beautiful ceremony that marked the last night of the Roses living together

After six long seasons, everything's coming up roses for the Rose family, as they're finally able to leave the town of 'Schitt's Creek.' They've been stranded in the town for three years, and six seasons, and now with all of them ready to leave the town behind forever...not all of them choose to do so. We take a closer look at the end of 'Schitt's Creek,' and what it means for the story of everyone's favorite characters.

The Roses

Most of the setup for how the Roses' story ends were set up in the season's penultimate episode, 'Start Spreading the News.' After their successful visit to New York gets Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy), Roland Schitt (Chris Eliot) and Stevie Budd (Emily Hampshire) funding for their motel empire across the country, the Roses plans move forward in a big way. It coincides with Moira Rose's (Catherine O'Hara) offer to return to 'Sunrise Bay' - this time with every single one of her demands met. The move is just what Alexis Rose (Annie Murphy) needs to decide to move to New York and start life as a publicist independently. David Rose (Daniel Levy) is the only one of the Roses who will be staying in Schitt's Creek, by choice, enjoying the rest of his life with the love of his life - and now husband - Patrick Brewer (Noah Reid).

The Town

It's not only the Roses whose fortunes have changed, however. The rest of the town isn't doing so badly, either. Stevie will be having her cake and eating it too, traveling across the country for the Rosebud Motel brand, while basing her home in Schitt's Creek. Twyla Sands (Sarah Levy), who has spent six seasons hinting at a very unfortunate life, turns out to have been the most fortunate of all - having won millions in the lottery, she buys the cafe she's worked in after a little encouragement from Alexis. Roland, who has been going through a few financial troubles of his own, is now able to splurge, buying himself a brand new car. That's not all he buys, though, as a final farewell to the Roses sees the controversial, accidentally-suggestive Schitt's Creek welcome billboard modified to feature all four of the Roses. It's a touching and very appropriately inappropriate gift from Roland to the Roses - and it's the last thing Johnny sees before leaving the town behind for good.

It's happy endings all around for both the Roses and the residents of Schitt's Creek, having all just gathered together to celebrate the union of Patrick and David in their own town hall. It's been a long road for the Roses, but they're back on their feet, with newfound independence and confidence in themselves. It's a simple ending, and while the story of the Roses continues in its own way, the family's story of being stranded in Schitt's Creek has drawn to a close.
