'Schitt's Creek' Episode 2 Review: Patrick patches up David’s pride and Moira joins the internet
Spoiler alert for Episode 2 of ‘Schitt’s Creek’
There’s little doubt that David (Daniel Levy) and Patrick (Noah Reid) are one of the cutest couples on television. Being on television does, unfortunately, mean that the road to their wedding day is going to be paved with certain challenges, and this episode, the couple faces what may be the most challenging obstacle of them all — David wet the bed.
David, of course, immediately starts a panicked spiral that not even seven showers in a row can fix. For someone as coiffed as David, it’s hard to imagine a more intimately humiliating thing happen to him. Patrick is just about as understanding as you’d expect, but putting a mattress protector down doesn’t help soothe David’s anxiety.
In the meanwhile, with the reinvigoration of the ‘Crows’ movie on ‘Interflix,’ Moira (Catherine O’Hara) has been asked to open a Twitter account to promote the film. Moira’s reluctant at first, but after Alexis (Annie Murphy) helps her post her first tweet and receiving five likes almost instantly, Moira is hooked. It’s a little surprising that it’s taken her this long to get on social media given how well she takes to it — Moira’s need for attention can now be instantly gratified by a worldwide platform. It’s probably just one of those generational things, but now that she’s online, it might be a little difficult to get her off it.
She has not got all the kinks figured out and after a live stream, she forgets to turn it off, broadcasting her discussing David’s bedwetting to the internet at large. Patrick takes charge of the situation admirably, making sure the video is taken down, and ensuring that David never, ever finds out about what happened. Patrick will do all he can to assure David that it’s a perfectly normal accident, but he knows that there are limits he will not subject David to.
Patrick has really become an invaluable member of the Rose family — arguably, the most level-headed one — and he’s found a comfortable balance between knowing when to be patiently accepting, and when to firmly put his foot down. David does manage to calm himself down, ultimately, and it’s a testament to how much he’s grown that it doesn’t take too much from Patrick for David to stop spiraling.
The B-plot follows Johnny (Eugene Levy), Roland (Chris Elliot) and Stevie (Emily Hampshire) as they check out a new motel, to expand the Rosebud Empire — only expansion isn’t something that Johnny’s discussed with Stevie before. Just about managing to navigate their way out of a mix-up between a motel showing and a funeral for the previous owner, it looks like Johnny Rose may be at the start of a new business empire, but that’s not what Stevie wants. It looks like Stevie is finally getting ready to leave Schitt’s Creek, if not for good, then to at least explore the world outside it. With ‘Schitt’s Creek’ in its final season, Stevie may just be our POV (point-of-view) character preparing to say goodbye.
The Rose family is slowly settling into new roles. David learning to cope with situations that aren’t always in control, and Johnny starts up a new business empire. It’s heartening to know that even in their final season, the Roses are still finding new ways to grow.
The next episode of Schitt’s Creek airs January 21 on Pop TV.
