'Save Me Too' Ending Explained: Nelly's confession to the murder of Gideon Charles hints at Season 3 renewal

It is no doubt that the system is against a man like Nelly, should he jeopardize everything he has now – love, friends, a possible stepson and most importantly Jody – for a murder he wasn't even complicit in?

Major spoilers for 'Save Me Too'

"I killed Gideon Charles," Nelly Rowe confesses to the police in the Season 2 finale of the 'Save Me' franchise. And just like that, 'Save Me Too' comes to a (rather disappointing) end.

If you're reading this story, you know very well that Nelly (Lennie James) did not kill Gideon Charles (Adrian Edmondson). When Grace (Olivia Gray) called him that night, she told him that he was already dead when she found him. It was only revealed to him later on that - a conclusion that he came upon himself when he confronted Gideon's wife – it was actually Grace who killed Gideon. Following a disturbing, humiliating conversation with the now-acquitted Gideon, Grace picks a kitchen knife and stabs him in the chest three times.

She escapes the police for the longest time with Nelly's help who is now juggling this situation with Jody (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness). Shortly after he arrived at the aforementioned conclusion, Nelly finds Jody upon successfully following a trail. Everyone was looking for the teenager, but no one as earnestly as Nelly.

Still in shock, Jody refused to say anything except when after a suicide attempt, he asks for Nelly. Together, Nelly, Jody and Claire (Suranne Jones) go to a therapist where Jody recounts the events over the period she was abused.

In a high stakes finale episode, 'Save Me Too' takes a complete U-turn. Nelly is eager to track down Paul - the unknown predator who Grace had told him about. Nailing Paul would mean that, according to his plan, Nelly could plant the murder weapon on him and have him take the blame for the murder of Gideon Charles. Only things are going to get harder from here.

One night, Claire and Barry (Barry Ward) take Jody to the pub to meet everyone. It is here that the story reaches a point where even Jody recognizes Paul. This means that it is more than important now to catch hold of Paul because the police will have two witnesses. When Nelly arrives at the shop where he first confronted Paul, it is shut and he has fled (no surprises here). All his plans are now in vain as Grace is hours away from being charged with the murder. What must he do now to save her?

He phones Jennifer Charles (Lesley Manville). She had previously proposed to help Grace in some way, and Nelly tells her to provide legal advice. As he does that, he is gearing up to take the blame himself. It is evident that the makers had been driving towards a season 3 all along. Only that many viewers, including us, were hoping for a conclusive end to the franchise. Keeping it open for a new season that will focus on Nelly and his murder confession, is unfair to viewers who loyally clocked in to watch him save his daughter – not to have him take the blame for someone else's crime.

It is no doubt that the system is against a man like Nelly. Why then should he jeopardize everything he has now - love, friends, a possible stepson, most importantly Jody – for a murder he wasn't even complicit in? Maybe season 3 will tell.

All episodes of 'Save Me Too' are currently streaming on Peacock.
