Save Brandon Bernard: Should death row inmate be executed? Here's why people are calling Department of Justice

Bernard was given the death sentence in 2000 for a crime he committed as a teenager but even jurors later agreed that they would change the sentence to life in prison

In the past, we have seen reality star Kim Kardashian help prison inmates gain freedom. The latest person she’s trying to help — Brandon Bernard — is, unfortunately, hours away from being put to death at a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, despite her appeal to President Donald Trump to alter his death sentence.

Bernard was given the death sentence in 2000 for a crime he committed as a teenager, and Kardashian just spoke to him for what could be the last time as he’s already being prepared to receive a lethal injection on the evening of December 10, as per Hollywood Life. The conversation has left Kardashian completely heartbroken.

She tweeted, "Just spoke to Brandon for what will likely be the last time. Hardest call I’ve ever had. Brandon, selfless as always, was focused on his family and making sure they are ok. He told me not to cry because our fight isn’t over.” She added, “When he told me he’s claustrophobic and they offered to give him a shot of Sedative to calm him down before they put him in the chair and he just didn’t want to panic, I literally lost it. I had to mute my phone so he wouldn’t hear me cry like that.” Kardashian added, “We didn’t say goodbye bc we wanted to be hopeful that we would talk again, we said talk to you soon!”

Bernard’s supporters are requesting people to call the Department of Justice and ask for his sentence to be commuted to life in prison. A website has been set up for more information and people can sign this letter to ask Trump to stop Bernard’s execution on helpsavebrandon.com. You can also generate a letter on https://boost4brandon.netlify.app/ and send it to your representatives, the DOJ and your senators.

Twitter was buzzing with people requesting others to call the DOJ. One said, "Hi @realDonaldTrump I am asking you to please commute #BrandonBernard's sentence to life without parole, and save him from execution. His former prosecutor and 5 of 9 surviving jurors want his life to be spared. He was only 18 at the time of the crime and was not the shooter.” Another said, “I’m trying my best to spread as much information and rt as much awareness as i can, we still have time to save him call, sign, email, tweet anything helps!!!”

One appealed, “PLEASE KEEP CALLING, TWEETING AND SIGNING PETITIONS! PLEASE HELP #BrandonBernard.” A user shared, “WE STILL HAVE TIME. CALL THE NUMBER, LEAVE A MESSAGE, DEMAND JUSTICE FOR BRANDON BERNARD.” Another advised, “PLEASE THERE IS STILL TIME TO HELP BRANDON!! PRESS # 2 TIMES AFTER YOU’RE DONE SPEAKING WHEN YOU CALL!! THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO BE SILENT. THIS MAN WILL LOOSE HIS LIFE IF WE DON’T HELP @realDonaldTrump.” One said, “#BrandonBernard CALL (202) 353-1555 choose option 9 and read the script!!”

As per CBS News, Bernard was sentenced to death in 2000 after a jury found him guilty of two counts of murder. However, developments in his case have raised questions about the conviction. He was 18 when he and accomplices robbed and abducted two youth ministers, Todd and Stacie Bagley, on a Texas military reservation in 1999. After putting the couple in the trunk of their car, an accomplice, Christopher Vialva, shot both the victims. Bernard lit the trunk on fire. Prosecutors told the jury that Stacie died because of the fire that Bernard started, and for that reason, they appealed to jurors to give the death penalty. An independent medical examiner was hired by the defense, after the trial, who determined that Stacie was "medically dead" before the fire. Vialva was executed for his role in the murders in September.

The prosecutor, Angela Moore, who fought an appeal to overturn the sentence, is now opposing his execution. Moore told CBS News she changed her stance because of "the legal reasons, aside from my own personal beliefs, it's the evidence and what we have found out since. Mr Bernard did not shoot and kill the victims in this case." Even five out of the nine surviving jurors have said they would change the sentence to life in prison. Former jury foreperson Calvin Kruger said he now supports a life sentence because Bernard was "not the ringleader behind these offenses, but a follower".
