A mass shooting took place on Thursday night, April 22, in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter - a popular and thriving nightlife area. It has been reported that San Diego Police Department investigators are on the scene, where one person was pronounced dead on the spot.

Multiple people have also reportedly suffered from injuries, including three with  life threatening injuries, and were transported to nearby hospitals. According to police, officers responded to the scene at around 10:30 pm local time. They were responding to reports of an employee of a restaurant getting shot at 5th Avenue and J Street, which is located a few blocks from Petco Park.

At the time of writing, police said that two suspects had been taken into custody. Their identities, however, were not revealed to the press. No other detail regarding the incident has been shared either. It has also been reported that the shooting did not just occur at one spot but took place at multiple locations along 5th Avenue.

As a result, the streets surrounding 5th Avenue have now been closed. It was also reported that the shooting did not occur inside any building, and the shooters had fired at people when they were all outdoors.

NBC San Diego quoted San Diego Police Department Lt Andra Brown and said that when the officers had arrived, they found a 28-year-old man down on the sidewalk. This was in front of the hotel and near the valet area, and this man seemed to be suffering from a gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Brown in turn quoted witnesses and said a suspect encountered the victim on J Street and shot him. It was also reported that the witnesses informed police the suspect walked north on Fifth Avenue – up one block to Island Avenue. Here, the suspect reportedly had an argument with another group of men. Four other victims were shot at here. The lieutenant said that out of the four victims, three were transported to hospital, and claimed that all were expected to survive.

The gun that was used at the shooting was also recovered by the police.
