Sailor Brinkley-Cook defends going shopping wearing N95 face mask as health workers are hit with shortages
Sailor Brinkley- Cook doesn't care that she is wearing a protective face mask when out in public.
The 21-year-old daughter of Christie Brinkley recently faced a lot of flak after she was photographed buying groceries in a N95 mask - a respiratory protective device that hospitals across the country are experiencing a shortage of as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
She received several "hateful messages" after she was photographed, but Sailor doesn't care much for it as she took to her Instagram to offer an explanation to those offended by her decision.
"My mom is an artist and does projects that require her to wear a mask so she had a stash of them in her art studio. We didn't buy them upon hearing about the spread of COVID-19. She kept one mask for each one of our family members and then donated the rest to local hospitals," she clarified on Instagram.
"I have one mask. My boyfriend has one mask. And we are VERY grateful to have one and are donating daily to organisation helping to create masks."
She had said that the family was donating 30% of proceeds from her brand Bellissima Prosecco to Direct Relief Foundation, an organization supplying hospitals with PPEs (Personal Protective Equipment). But this explanation wasn't enough as Sailor continued receiving hate from her followers. She then took to her Instagram stories and uploaded a lengthy video getting back at her followers.
"I think it's really sh***y that people take time out of their day to write to me to tell me I'm ugly, I'm fat, I'm useless, I should get a job, I'm a waste of space, I'm a disgrace," she said. "And, I've been getting them a lot recently, and I don't know whether it's being cooped up in your houses (that's) making you really want to tear down a 21-year-old, but I just gotta say, you know, have some humanity, y'all"
"Like, I'm a person, I have feelings, and I'm lucky because I've dealt with this s**t my entire life," she continued. "So, I can now understand that I have more pity for you guys than hatred for myself, based off of what you guys are saying. But yeah, I just want y'all to know that I'm not gonna take it."
She then had some advice to share for those who had time to berate her. "Why do you care about me and my life? It's really not that interesting and it's a waste of time for you guys, because it's not gonna hurt me. I'm OK. I'm fine with myself. So just stop. It's pretty lame."
Mom Christine had earlier revealed in an interview to Extra that Sailor had been isolating herself and had been maintaining her distance from the family. "Sailor was touring with ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ And she was meeting with crowds of people every night, hugging everybody so she said, 'Mom, there is no way I'm coming home until I'm 100% sure I haven't contracted anything.’"
