'Sacred Lies: The Singing Bones' Episode 5: Peter takes a painful trip down memory lane
The article contains spoilers for 'Sacred Lies' Episode 5 'Prom Night'
'Prom Night' has multiple story threads, but the most important is about Peter (Ryan Kwanten) proving to his father that he was not a weakling. The episode captures his rocky relationship with his father, William (Michael Kopsa). After being on the run following the unearthing of the Cherry Falls Jane Doe sisters (played by Siobhan Williams and Emily Alyn Lind), Peter goes back to his home and stays with William while also thinking about the past.
Elsewhere, Harper (Juliette Lewis) faces the consequences of her unconventional detective work while Elsie reunites with Terence.
The episode traces back to a young Peter who is physically abused by William for being weak and also with the fear that he would never get close to his father. He explains to Peter in the present that since the son was close to his mother, Peter would never grow up to "be a man".
It also establishes the fact that Peter was the one who killed one of the Jane Doe sisters by bashing her head with a rock repeatedly. 'Prom Night' paints two shades to the character. One where he is indeed a murderer and the other where he's shown to be repenting and looking back at how she shaped up to be the person he was.
It also asks questions about Elsie's (Jordan Alexander) real parents. If Peter was not her dad, then how did he come in contact with Elsie when she was little? And what happened to the photographer Luther after? Did he run into Peter?
With a good five episodes remaining, the storyline gets more intense and it's interesting to see where Peter finally ends up.
