Authorities have revealed that a gunman opened fire outside a restaurant in downtown Sacramento and killed at least six people while injuring nearly a dozen others. The suspect, who is yet to be identified, reportedly fled the scene.

The tragedy befell at 2 am on Sunday, April 3, before police officers responded to reports of an active shooter in the area of 10th Street and K Street in downtown Sacramento. The shooting reportedly took place shortly after the last call for bars operating in the area. While further details of what exactly transpired were not immediately known at the time of publication, witnesses said a man opened fire while driving past a crowd near El Santo restaurant and fled the scene immediately after. Witnesses also said as many as 50 gunshots were heard, possibly fired from an automatic weapon.

According to BNO News, a viral video on social media showed an altercation taking place at the time of the shooting, although it's yet to be established if the two incidents were linked.

“Officers located at least 15 shooting victims, including six who are deceased,” a spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department confirmed in a statement. Police said victims were located at multiple spots in the downtown area possibly after fleeing the mass shooting.

The Sacramento Police Department announced in a tweet posted just before 7 am that 9th St to 13th St was closed between L St & J St for an investigation into the shooting, adding that a “large police presence will remain" and that "the scene remains active." The department wrote, “ADVISORY: 9th St to 13th St is closed between L St & J St as officers investigate a shooting with multiple victims. Conditions unknown at this time. Please avoid the area as a large police presence will remain and the scene remains active.”

That said, authorities are yet to formally identify the suspect and have not released any further details about a possible motive.

'Just horrific'

Berry Accius of Sacramento’s Voice of the Youth said he arrived in the area at about 2:30 a.m. PDT and found a “chaotic” scene, KXTV reported.

“A lot of victims with blood, just watching some of the families that didn’t know if their loved one was alive, running, trying to figure out what was happening, people distraught, people discombobulated,” Accius told the television station. “It was just horrific.”

“Another shooting. More lives lost. The national gun violence epidemic has hit our community — again,” Sacramento city council member Katie Valenzuela tweeted.
