Russian media calls Joe Biden 'boring, old man' and describes Jill Biden as 'charmless': 'We will miss Melania'
It is Day 1 of President Joe Biden's new reign in America and Russian media might have already chosen to dismiss the new commander-in-chief and the First Lady Jill Biden. On the day of the inauguration on January 20, 2021, Russian state media channels portrayed President Joe Biden as a forgetful old man, propagating that he is a "boring, old man" at the same time slamming the "charmless" new First Lady.
Sixty minutes, the lunchtime discussion show on Channel One was helmed by TV host Olga Skabeyeva and Aleksey Zhuralyev, a deputy for the ruling United Russia party. During the episode, the latter dismissed the new president's debut speech as words of a "boring, old man". Describing the inaugural speech as “more a will than a political program,” Zhuralyev added the US leader showed “he was only interested in minority rights.” Clearly the channel completely ignored the negative sentiments and deteriorating public opinion of the Trumps and went on to criticize Joe and Jill Biden.
No new friends
With statements like these, is Russia trying to convey the message that the Bidens aren't as welcome as the Trumps were four years ago?
Taking a dig at the various new executive orders signed by the new president, co-host Yevgeny Popov discussed the "unprecedented" number of the orders. “Seventeen new anti-Trump laws,” he highlighted, noting Biden’s “out-of-control printer” had brought forward new laws the “whole world” had been waiting for.
“Yes,” Popov announced with a smile and dramatic pause, “the return of transgender soldiers to the American army.” Skkabeyeva also said that by choosing Army General Lloyd Austin, "a bBack man," Biden had already signaled that he would "start a war with whites in the army."
There is no doubt that these comments were well-received, since Russian President Vladimir Putin has been very vocal about his desire to curb any liberalization of laws concerning LGBTQ rights in Russia.
In an interview with local media, Konstantin Kosachyov, the chair of the foreign affairs committee of Russia’s upper house, reportedly said the inauguration was “no celebration.” It would prove to be a departure point for ever-deepening division in the US, he said. The relations between US and Russia are at their worst since the Cold War and personal relations between Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden are known to be problematic. In a 2014 interview with the New Yorker, then VP Biden claimed he had told Putin he had “no soul”.
Russia's own Melania
'Sixty Minutes' co-host Olga Skabeyeva mourned the departure of the "feminine charm" of Melania Trump from the White House. In the same breath, the new First Lady was criticized. “We will miss Melania and her fantastic dresses. The charmless Jill Biden is no comparison,” she gushed. this is notwithstanding the fact that the former First Lady’s 47 per cent unfavorable rating makes her the most unpopular presidential wife in history.
To say that social media is shocked by this doesn't even cut it. "I couldn't follow the celebration in United States yesterday. Russian President has hackd my WIFI. My TV didnt on without internet. Now I am so Happy that @JoeBiden in office," one user tweeted.
