Rosalynn Carter funeral: Service for former first lady set to take place in Georgia next week
PLAINS, GEORGIA: Former president Jimmy Carter's wife Rosalynn Carter's funeral services will reportedly take place in Plains, Georgia, next week, as per an announcement by the Carter Center, The Hill reported.
The service will reportedly be part of the remembrance ceremonies including a wreath laying and a tribute. A funeral service for family and invited friends will also take place at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains on November 22.
Carter passed away at the age of 96 in her home in Plains on Sunday, November 19, shortly after she joined her husband in entering hospice care.
The former first lady was reportedly diagnosed with dementia in March, nearly a month after her husband entered hospice care.
Public will be welcome to pay respects to Rosalynn Carter
Following the funeral service for family and invited friends at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains on Wednesday, Carter's casket will reportedly be taken to the Carter family residence for a private interment.
The Carter Center reportedly said the public is welcome to line the motorcade route in designated viewing areas when the former first lady's casket will proceed from the church.
On Monday, November 27, Carter's body will be transferred to a hearse at a medical center in Americus, Georgia. Her remains will then be taken to the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex at Georgia Southwestern State University, where authorities have planned a wreath-laying ceremony.
The public will also be able to pay their respects to Carter along the motorcade’s route to the university, the Carter Center reportedly mentioned.
Members of the public have also been invited to pay their respects to the former first lady at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, where she will be laid to rest.
On Tuesday, November 28, a departure ceremony will take place from the presidential library and a tribute service will be held with invited guests at Glenn Memorial Church.
Jimmy Carter shared heartfelt tribute to wife Rosalynn Carter
As heaps of tributes poured in for Rosalynn Carter in the wake of her demise, the former US president shared a heartfelt statement on his wife's passing via The Carter Center.
He said that Carter was his "equal partner in everything I ever accomplished." "She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it," he added.
"As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me," the former president mentioned.
The Carters celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary in July. Back in 2021, their marriage became the longest for a first couple in US history, The Hill reported.
Carter is survived by her husband, four children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, as per The Carter Center.
