Ronald Reagan’s daughter Patti Davis slams Trump in no hold's barred editorial: 'His cruelty really has no limits'
Former President Ronald Reagan's daughter Patti Davis joined the many others who criticized the impeached President Donald Trump over his remarks about the late Democratic representative John Dingell. At a campaign rally in Michigan which was held on Wednesday, Trump had implied that Dingell, who died in February, could be in hell.
In an op-ed for the Washington Post on Thursday, Davis said that his comments about Dingell showed that Trump's "cruelty really has no limits". She wrote, "Trump has assaulted numerous people at his rallies — a Gold Star family, a disabled reporter, various women, political rivals. He knows full well the impact of attacking people so publicly."
She also wrote, "Then he aimed for the jugular, saying that maybe John Dingell was “looking up” from below. So, to be clear, the president of the United States went to the home state of a congressman who died not that long ago and snarked that Dingell might be in hell. For probably the first time ever, some in his crowd of die-hard fans groaned."
Writing of Nancy Pelosi's comments about her understanding of Trump, she wrote, "'What the president misunderstands,' House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday, 'is that cruelty is not wit'. I have to disagree with her. I think he understands perfectly the power of cruelty to inflict deep wounds. He wasn’t aiming for wit. He wouldn’t bother with wit when he can aim for the heart of a widow and try to break it again."
Before Davis' op-ed, Dingell's wife Debbie Dingell, who is also a representative also tweeted her response to Trump's remarks about her husband and wrote, "Mr. President, let’s set politics aside. My husband earned all his accolades after a lifetime of service. I’m preparing for the first holiday season without the man I love. You brought me down in a way you can never imagine and your hurtful words just made my healing much harder."
