The two tennis superstars Roger Federer and Serena Williams are all set to play each other for the first time ever in an inter-gender mixed doubles match which will be taking place in Australia on Tuesday.

Federer and Williams will be playing against each other at the Hopman Cup competition in Perth and, in the weeks leading up to their historic match, both the highly successful and arguably the greatest men's and women's players of all time have paid touching tributes to each other.

Federer shared, "It's very exciting for both of us. I hope a lot of tennis fans will tune in to watch the match because it's going to be one time and probably never again in this kind of a competition."

"I admire everything she's done on and off the court. We can relate to one another now even more so for being parents. I've played with some of the greatest doubles players in the world in Martina Navratilova and Martina Hingis, and I've also played against some of the best in Venus [Williams] and other great ones in the past," he continued. "This time it's against Serena, who is one of the biggest champions ever in our sport — men and women combined," he added.

Williams has already expressed her desire to take a selfie with Federer to share on Instagram. Federer responded saying, "It's the age of social media."

Even though the two have had long and successful careers and also attended a few Wimbledon champion dinners together, Roger shared that he and Serena barely knew each other. "I don't know her that well. In the corridors and cafes, walking by each other, sometimes in the past she has asked me how are the kiddies and how is everyone doing, but if I said I know her it would be a bit of an exaggeration."

The Hopman Cup is an international tournament where mixed-gender teams compete. The competition also acts as a warm-up before the Australian Open takes place in January. This year's tournament is also very likely to be Perth's final Hopman Cup. The match between Roger Federer and Serena Williams is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime match.

This is one of the most anticipated matches which involve a man and a woman ever since the first 'battle of the sexes' match which took place in 1973 in which Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs in an exhibition singles match. Roger Federer and his partner Belinda Bencic will take on Serena Williams and Frances Tiafoe.
