Roer's Zoofari fire: Waffles the giraffe dies with female companion in Virginia, Internet says 'kids loved him'
RESTON, VIRGINIA: A tragic fire accident at Roer's Zoofari in Reston, Virginia, on Monday, March 8, claimed the life of the beloved giraffe Waafles and his unnamed female companion. According to fire officials, the fire started in the 1200 block of Hunter Mill Road at around 5:38 pm.
Fairfax County Fire/Rescue issued the following statement on Twitter, "UPDATE: 1200 block of Hunter Mill Road: The fire is under control. Tragically, two giraffes were found deceased. No other animals injured, and all are being attended to by zoo staff. No reported firefighter injuries at this time. Fire investigators on scene. #FCFRD"

The owners of the zoo said in a separate statement that fire officials were able to rescue 20 other animals housed in the same area and no injuries were reported. "Unfortunately, we have very sad news to share. Tonight the Roer's Zoofari staff and family are devastated following a barn fire that claimed the life of our beloved giraffe, 'Waffles', and his new giraffe companion yet to be named."
"Zoofari owner, Vanessa Roer, received the call at 5:30 pm from Fairfax County dispatch that the barn where the giraffes were housed caught fire. Staff and the zoo's veterinarian arrived within minutes to help rescue and care for approximately 20 other animals housed in the same area. We are grateful that no staff members or other Zoofari animals were injured or lost."
It has also noted that the zoo will be shut down temporarily. "Please note that Zoofari will be closed until further notice. Thank you for all of your support and condolences to our zoo family during this time. Thank you to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department for responding so quickly," the statement added.
People soon rushed to Twitter to mourn the loss of beloved Waffle, who was a favorite among the visitors. Twitter users have also shared their condolences for Waffle's deceased companion. One user tweeted, "Here is a photo of Waffles, one of the two giraffes that died during the fire at Roer's Zoofari. It was sent to us by Roer’s Zoofari team."
Another added, "SO SAD. Two giraffes found dead after a fire at Roer's Zoofari in Reston, Virginia." One shared, "My heart is breaking right now. I met Waffles late last year and fell in love with his sweet face. My heart goes out to the staff who loved and cared for him, as well as all the kids who grew to love him over the years."
