Sentence in prison for 5.5 years
"She has initiated her payments towards restitution, and we hope to have her home as soon as possible so that she may resume life with her family and work, putting this chapter of her life behind her", the representative added.
The 49-year-old pleaded guilty in July 2022 to defrauding thousands of people out of money, particularly the elderly, in a telemarketing scheme. Then, she was taken into custody on February 4, 2023, to serve her six-and-a-half-year sentence, which is now five and a half years. She also has to pay $6.5 million in restitution. She is currently in Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas. Before surrendering, she denied the accusations and fought for her innocence for months both on-air and on social media.
Scammed victims into buying fake business mentoring
Shah scammed her victims into buying fake business mentoring before they found themselves in unrelenting subscription payments they could not get out of, according to a report by the Daily Mail. Prosecutors also claim that the reality TV star callously laughed with colleagues when some of the victims called them in tears begging to be released from the debts.
After admitting guilty, Shah took to Instagram to apologize for her crime to her fans and everyone else. "I am surrendering to serve a sentence in federal prison today," she wrote. "It is the price I must pay for the bad decisions I made. People got hurt because of my decisions. While incarcerated, I will work to make amends and reconcile with the victims of my crime. In time, I pray that people will judge me for the way I responded to this sentence, rather than only for the decisions that led me to prison", she added.
